According to the Rare Disease Day website, a rare disease in Europe is one that affects one in 2000. The United States defines a rare disease as one that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans at a time.

Issues Patients Face

Rare diseases are just that- rare. This causes issues such as lack of knowledge about the disease and no treatments for the disease. This, in turn, places a huge burden on patients and their loved ones.
