What Should People Know About Vitiligo?

There's still a lot that we don't know.

If you have vitiligo, you may have gotten a confused look from time to time.

Probably from people who didn't have much experience with or knowledge about it.

It's time to set the record straight, though. So tell us, what's something you wish people knew about vitiligo?

Maybe you want more people to know that it's not something to be ashamed of — even if it was hard for you to accept it at first.

Because it makes your body that much more unique, and you're proud of that.

Or maybe you wish they knew that it's not contagious, it's not caused by stress, and it's certainly not an STI.

(Among other misconceptions.)

Maybe you wish people knew that it might be an autoimmune disorder.

And that it can affect EVERY skin type.

Or perhaps you wished more people who stared at you actually asked you about it.

While also knowing that some questions can be a bit too intrusive or insensitive — and that's a boundary they shouldn't cross.

We want to hear your story.

Whether you've had it for only a short time or for many years, tell us what you wish people without vitiligo knew about your condition, and maybe even include how you came to realize what people should know — if you remember.

If you have any pictures of your vitiligo, also feel free to send one in along with your comment by using the Dropbox below. Your story may be featured in an upcoming BuzzFeed Health post.
