We asked the BuzzFeed Community which misconceptions about emo music annoy them most. Let's set the record straight.
1. First of all, the term "emo" isn't even our favorite way to phrase it. We just kind of accept it, tbh.
2. But if that's what we're gonna call it, know that it does NOT all sound the same. In fact, it encapsulates many genres, including pop-punk and indie.
3. Though there are quite a few mainstream emo bands, the list of artists in the genre goes far beyond those bands — there's a lot to discover!

4. And just because some emo bands have become popular, doesn't necessarily mean we're fans.
5. Just because someone likes emo music, it doesn't mean they don't like pop stuff, like Taylor Swift.
6. The stereotypical wardrobe is just that: a stereotype. Toss aside your skinny jean and thick eyeliner expectations.
7. And though black looks amazing on everyone, we definitely wear other colors.
8. And despite popular belief, a good majority of fans have never even seen the inside of a Hot Topic.
9. But if you do ~dress the part~, you hate being called "goth."
10. All different kinds of people are fans of the genre, too. Don't peg it to a certain skin tone.
11. Real talk: Not every artist is “scary looking."
12. Not all of the lyrics in emo songs are depressing and dark.
13. And listening to it doesn't necessarily put you in a downer mood. Listening to your bands actually has the opposite effect.
14. IT 👏 ISN'T 👏 JUST 👏 FOR 👏 TEENAGERS.
15. Everyone obviously has emotions, but it isn't a requirement to be an extremely sad person to listen to the music.
16. Emo music is NOT the same thing as death metal.
