21 Ways To Trick People Into Thinking You Have Your Shit Together

Fake it 'til you make it.

There's no single formula for exuding an air of shit-togetherness. It's one of those intangible things, like some sort of ~aura~ that makes you seem like you really have it together.

But in my completely unscientific opinion, there are some little things things that convey that you're doing just fine at this whole "existing" thing — even when you're not. So here's how you might be able to fake it:

    1. Keep your phone screen smudge-free.

    2. Develop a before-bed routine.

Before bed is the optimal time to do all the little things that subtly level you up as a person — practicing good hygiene and self-care, reading, tidying up your home, whatever you decide to dedicate your time to. Here are a bunch of things to do before you sleep if you need some ideas.

    3. Have activities that you regularly enjoy doing by yourself.

    4. Carry around tissues, aspirin, gum, Tide to Go pens, phone chargers, and every other miscellaneous thing that never seems to be around when you need it.

    5. And then, regularly clean out random trash in your bag to give the illusion it was never there in the first place.

    6. Get places on time — or a little early.

    7. Pay for your own Netflix, Hulu, etc. subscriptions instead of bumming off someone you don't even talk to anymore.

    8. Sleep on white sheets.

    9. Remember people's names and greet them with enthusiasm.

    10. Get up with one alarm, no snooze allowed.

    11. Have a signature scent.

    12. Don't wear wrinkly clothes.

    13. Stick to a skincare routine instead of giving up after a few days after your skin isn't magically transformed.

    14. Eat your meals at an honest-to-god table instead of in bed or on your couch in front of Netflix.

    15. Regularly use sunscreen. Yes, all year.

    16. Host parties or get-togethers at your place.

    17. Have a place you're a regular at.

    18. Cook more often than you get takeout.

    19. Carry a reusable water bottle.

    20. Become an expert in something random.

    21. Write thank-you cards or notes — and not just for presents.
