19 Fiction Books Written By Celebs Ranked From Best To Worst

    Not all celebrity authors are bad, but finding good ones isn't easy.

    Being a celebrity can open the door for opportunities that wouldn't have existed for people before.

    One of the doors most ventured through is into the publishing world. Countless celebrities try their hand at writing, usually sticking to memoirs.

    These celebrities made the bold move of venturing into fiction, albeit to mixed results. I ranked their books from best to worst, and here's what I came up with.

    1. Postcards from the Edge by Carrie Fisher

    Carrie Fisher was celebrated for changing the conversation around mental health with her loosely-autobiographical first dive into fiction, Postcards from the Edge.  It's filled with dark humor surrounding a woman's time in rehab and how she deals with life thereafter.

    2. Montaro Caine by Sidney Poitier

    In his first novel, Sidney Poitier created a sci-fi thriller that follows a CEO who is losing control of everything. Faced with a crisis, he discovers a coin that could right his wrongs but also makes him a lot of immediate enemies.

    3. Mycroft Holmes by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made a name for himself writing children's and young adult fiction. His adult debut, which focuses on the older brother of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, received rave reviews.

    4. When It Happens to You by Molly Ringwald

    Molly Ringwald is widely known for her acting, but her debut novel received a lot of praise for telling real, raw stories about infertility, infidelity, and family. Through linked stories, she explores different themes around adult relationships.

    5. An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin

    Steve Martin is a majorly talented writer, and An Object of Beauty is one of many projects that attests to that. It's one of two fiction novels he's published and follows a young woman who moves to New York to immerse herself in the art scene. 

    6. The Very Fairy Princess by Julie Andrews

    Everyone may not believe Gerry is a very fairy character, but she very much does in this charming book from the beloved Julie Andrews. Few fans know she wrote children's books for years under the name Julie Edwards before revealing herself to be the author.

    7. Indeh: A Story of the Apache Wars by Ethan Hawke and Greg Ruth

    Ethan Hawke helped pen a really compelling graphic novel that depicts the war between the United States and the Apache nations in 1872. The novel explores the horrors of war and what happens to nations and cultures in the mix. 

    8. One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories by B.J. Novak

    B.J. Novak's fiction debut was pretty well received. The series of short stories explore being human in a way that's humorous but has staying power.

    9. Get Jiro! by Anthony Bourdain

    Anthony Bourdain's graphic novel is about a sushi chef that sometimes decapitates rude diners in a dystopian world where rival warlords battle for dominance in a culinary gang war of sorts. It has satire that reminds you of just how smart and funny Bourdain could be.

    10. The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie

    Before he was beloved for House, Hugh Laurie penned his hilarious story that's a spoof on the spy genre. In his book, a former soldier ends up mixed up in government-level conspiracies and tries to sort out what's really what.

    11. L.A. Candy by Lauren Conrad

    Lauren Conrad followed the celebrity formula of fictionalizing their real-life experience, but it really worked for her. She went on to write two different fictional series before moving on to nonfiction lifestyle books.

    12. Holy Cow by David Duchovny

    David Duchovny's fable-novel that's like an international Animal Farm got mixed reviews. While some people thought it was interesting and insightful, others thought he might be better suited for acting than for commentary on international affairs.

    13. Gray by Pete Wentz

    Pete Wentz's novel tells the story of a musician named Pete who deals with fame and a rapidly changing life as he experiences success for the first time. It explores a lot of the dark sides of fame and the entertainment industry in a raw, honest look at the cost of getting everything you want.

    14. Modelland by Tyra Banks

    Tyra's young adult novel is all about a boarding school for elite young models. Some people hailed it as a guilty pleasure, but others said it was only guilty of being overly campy and too surreal.

    15. Elixir by Hilary Duff

    Hilary Duff really knew how to grow with her audience, and her venture into YA authorship was proof of it. Elixir may not have been an award-winner, but the book about a teen girl trying to solve her father's disappearance while being caught in a love triangle was good enough to continue into a three-book series.

    16. Rebels: City of Indra by Kendall and Kylie Jenner

    Not entirely sure where a young adult sci-fi story about two sisters living in a world that's half paradise, half dystopia fit into Kendall and Kylie's brand, but it very much graced. The sisters, Lex and Livia, are twins, but loosely based around Kylie and Kendall's personalities.

    17. A Shore Thing by Nicole Polizzi

    In the early days of Jersey Shore, Snooki tried her hand at fiction with a fictionalized Jersey Shore summer adventure between two cousins. There were just two hundred too many references to the reality series for most readers to enjoy, however.

    18. In the Making (Celebrity Sex Tape) by Farrah Abraham

    Fallon Opal's story about finding herself without care for outside judgment is not all that different from Farrah Abraham's, and audiences weren't into it. That didn't stop this from being book one in a trilogy, however.

    19. The Perfect Letter: A Novel by Chris Harrison

    Chris Harrison's romance book was said to be inspired by his years of hosting The Bachelor and watching people try to make love connections. The intimacy scenes go there, and some readers thought it was a little too much, but others definitely shared a giggle over it in book club.
