First of all, this city is BEAUTIFUL. Budapest looks like it came straight out of some kind of fairy tale, with its old Europe architecture and waterfront setting. But when visiting, you'll also realize that the food is amazing, there's tons of history and culture, and it's way more affordable than some of the more popular European destinations. Sure, you're probably going to want to see Dublin if you're visiting Ireland, but if you want a slightly more friendly, laid-back city that still has amazing pubs, food, and music scenes, check out Cork.

If you want to visit Japan for its history and natural beauty, consider Nara as one of your stops. It was originally Japan's first permanent capital, all the way back in the year 710, and it has tons of temples, shrines, and an old imperial palace as a result.

This medieval city is tucked into a bay near the Adriatic Sea, just down the coast from the much more popular city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. While Kotor is more of a port town than a beach town, it still has spectacular water and mountain views, not to mention beautiful medieval architecture.

There are two types of beachgoers: those who want to lounge and those who want to surf. If you're the latter, Essaouira is the spot for you. Not only does it have vast, sandy beaches (with the occasional camel!), it also tends to have windy conditions that are perfect for surfing, kite-surfing, and other sporty beach activities. Plus, the name has four different vowels in a row, and that has to count for something.

If you're an American who's looking to stay a little closer to home (damn you, bank account!), consider the little mountain city of Asheville. Its location allows you to enjoy mountain hikes and hot springs if that's your thing, or you can just stay in town and enjoy fantastic food (many restaurants serve local and organic fare). There's also the majestic Biltmore Estate, a sprawling former home of the Vanderbilt family that you can tour.
