12 Random, Weird Facts So You Can Learn Something This Week

Shrek originally had a Canadian accent.

    1. You can't swallow and breathe at the same time...unless you're a newborn baby.

Babies can swallow and breathe at the same time (it's so that they can breastfeed effectively), but if you try it right now, you won't be able to do it.

    2. George Washington is protected by law from being outranked by any other military officer, even now. If we ever have a six-star general, Washington would posthumously be promoted to a seven-star general to maintain the top rank.

American Public Law 94-479, passed in 1976, posthumously promoted Washington to "General of the Armies of the United States." Depending on your interpretation of this law, this means that Washington might be considered America's only six-star general, since we've had a few five-star generals throughout history.

    3. Mike Myers originally recorded his lines in Shrek in a thick Canadian accent. After seeing some footage, he decided that a Scottish accent would be better. The change ended up costing roughly $4 million.

According to DreamWorks exec Jeffrey Katzenberg, about one-third of the animation for Shrek's character had already been done. In order to accommodate the change, much of the animation had to be re-done, which ended up costing $4 million β€” or 10% of the movie's total budget β€” according to Katzenberg.

    4. Rapper Pusha T wrote the "I'm Lovin' It" jingle for McDonald's...but he doesn't own any publishing rights.

Pusha T claimed in a podcast interview that he got an upfront payment for the jingle ($500,000, definitely not chump change!), but he doesn't own any publishing on it. It's been used for many years, so he probably would have earned a lot more if he did. However, he also wrote the music behind the "We Have the Meats" slogan for Arby's, and he does own 40% of publishing for that.

    5. Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley asked his 4-year-old son what they should name the new character who would eventually be called Forky. The kid suggested "Fork Face."

This explains why they went with "Forky" instead of "Sporky": Cooley said it made him realize that since Bonnie is the same age as his son was at the time, she might not know what a spork is.

    6. Michael Caine's birth name is Maurice Micklewhite. He didn't legally change it to Michael Caine until he was 83 years old.

His original stage name was Michael Scott, but he had to change that when he moved to London and there was already a semi-famous stage actor with the same name. So he picked Caine after spotting a poster for The Caine Mutiny while on the phone with his agent. However, Michael Caine was still just a stage name until 2016, when Caine finally decided to change his name legally to avoid getting held up by airport security.

    7. The forbidden fruit that Adam and Eve eat in the Bible is never mentioned to be an apple.

All the book of Genesis says is that the fruit came from a tree, without mentioning what kind of fruit or what kind of tree. Apples started being associated with the story around the 12th century, possibly because of a Latin pun wherein the word "malus" means both "apple" and "evil."

    8. Human babies are born with roughly 300 bones. Once you become an adult, you're down to 206 bones.

You don't lose bones, mind you. Instead, the bones you have as a baby β€” which have a lot of cartilage instead of bone β€” fuse together over time to form an adult skeleton.

    9. Sloths go without pooping for 5–7 days on average, and as much as one-third of their body weight is poop by the time they finally "go."

According to Sarah Kennedy, cofounder of the Sloth Conservation Foundation, sloths often smile after they poop. Maybe it's because of relief, or maybe it's because β€” in the wild, anyway β€” as much as 50% of sloth deaths come from pooping since it opens sloths up to predators. Successfully pooping without being eaten is a pretty big accomplishment for a sloth.

    10. The oldest unchanged national flag is the flag of Denmark.

The current flag β€” a white cross on a red background β€” was adopted in 1625 and has remained the same ever since. No other country has had the same flag design for as long!

    11. Bananas are berries.

In the botanical sense, a banana counts as a berry because it's not a stone fruit, it has a single fleshy body, and it has seeds within the body.

    12. The gender-neutral word for niece or nephew is nibling.

So there you go, you don't have to say, "I saw my niece and nephew the other day," you can just say, "I saw my niblings the other day."
