We, the people, have been fighting dress codes since the dawn of time.
School dress codes are abhorrently sexist, and depending on the region you grow up in, they can go from bad to worse.
Recently, Drew Jarding and Kenzie Crimmins, two high schoolers in Illinois, decided to prove just how sexist dress codes really are by wearing similar outfits to school and documenting the process via TikTok. "Dressing the same to school to show how dress codes are sexist," Drew captioned the video.
As you can see, Kenzie is wearing a crop top and leggings, and Drew is wearing a crop top and shorts.
Drew said he wanted them to dress as similarly as possible, but wanted Kenzie's outfit to be a tad more "discreet." "Just so you could show how biased they really are," Drew told BuzzFeed.
Kenzie and Drew made it through most of the day, walking to class and even dancing in front of teachers at one point, without anyone saying anything to them.
And then in 7th period, Kenzie got written up for "showing her stomach," but Drew made it out scot-free.
Kenzie was, of course, mad. "Honestly, it just makes me want to wear clothes like that more, because the standards are so not the same," she said.
According to Drew, their school's dress code prohibits spaghetti straps or straps that show too much shoulder, crop tops, and ripped jeans. Likewise, pants, dresses, and shorts must be below the knee.
Thus, their plot was born. "I had known that dress codes had been unfair for a while, I just didn't know to this extent," Drew said. "I was wearing multiple outfits that were going against the code or whatever and they hadn't said a single thing to me all that week."
