The attacks – referred to as the “Night of Shame” – have sparked a national debate about the continuing problem of women's safety in India. According to eyewitnesses, the horde of men shouted lewd comments at women, groped and harassed them, and forced some to take off their heels and run to nearby police officers for help.

Since the incident, women have been tweeting about their first-hand, personal experiences with sexual assault. Some of them have been curated here with permission from the women who shared them.

Some women have been responding to Comedian Sahil Shah's Facebook post, sharing their stories there.

Earlier today, Bengaluru police commissioner Praveen Sood told the BBC that he had reviewed CCTV footage, and that the alleged "sex attacks" on the night of 31 December never took place.
