27 Things You Might Not Have Known About "Scrubs"

We all agree that Scrubs is the best show ever, but did you know that there were more than 400 songs played over nine seasons?

1. Turk and J.D. are actually named after real-life doctors Jonathan Doris and Jon Turk.

2. Dr. Cox's running gag of calling J.D. by a girl's name is what actor John C. McGinley actually does in real life to his good friend John Cusack.

Bonus: Here's the complete list of girl's names that Dr. Cox has ever used.

3. The chest X-ray in the opening was backward for the first five seasons.

4. The X-ray was finally corrected by Dr. Kim Briggs in the Season 5 episode "My Urologist."

5. Ted's a cappella band, The Worthless Peons, is actually actor Sam Lloyd's band in real life, The Blanks.

6. The hospital where Scrubs is filmed, North Hollywood Medical Center, was also the hospital from Children’s Hospital for its first few seasons.

7. The episode of The Office in which Pam finds out she's pregnant was also shot at Sacred Heart, just with different lighting.

8. Every episode title from the first eight seasons begins with "My."

The only change is when episodes are narrated by other characters, in which case they begin with "Her," "Their," or "Our."

9. When the show's writers thought the show might not make it through the first season, they never allowed the janitor to interact with any characters other than J.D.

10. Neil Flynn was so good that he made up most of his lines, and the writers joked that he never actually followed the script.

11. Zach Braff was the one who suggested that Lazlo Bane's "Superman" should be the show's theme song.

12. In several episodes throughout the show's run, Dr. Cox wears a blue and yellow wristband. The band is actually in support of a charity for Down's Syndrome, one that actor McGinley is actively involved in.

13. Dr. Cox’s infamous nose flick is a hat-tip to the classic movie The Sting.

14. Christa Miller, who portrays Dr. Cox's wife, Jordan Sullivan, is actually creator Bill Lawrence's wife.

15. In fact, actors from Lawrence's productions, including Scrubs, Spin City, and Cougar Town often appeared in their sister shows.

16. The photograph of Ted's mom in his office is Sam Lloyd’s real-life mom.

17. Elliot’s makeover in Season 3's "My American Girl" was reportedly demanded by NBC.

They allegedly wanted Elliot to be more alluring, as opposed to the haggard and tired perception that Lawrence had in mind for all the interns.

18. Although left ambiguous, the janitor’s name is actually Glenn Matthews.

19. The stunt doubles that played J.D. and Elliot in the Season 2 episode "My First Step" met on the set of Scrubs that day, and eventually got married.

20. Several cast members from Scrubs have appeared in Lawrence’s animated sitcom Clone High.

21. Judy Reyes is the only original cast member to not make a single appearance in Season 9.

22. "Eagle!", a running gag throughout the show, which has since become a fan favorite, was actually not scripted and was improvised by Zach Braff in Season 1.

23. Michael Muhney, best known as Sheriff Lamb on Veronica Mars, was a frontrunner for the role of J.D. but wasn't selected because he wasn't quirky enough.

24. Dr. Cox often says the line "What do you say there, Bob?" to Bob Kelso. The line is actually a phrase from the 1986 movie Platoon, in which John C. McGinley frequently repeats the very same phrase.

25. Dr. Kelso's wife, Enid, although mentioned a number of times throughout the show's run, has never appeared on screen.

26. Music is a big part of every episode of Scrubs. Over nine seasons, 445 songs have been played.

27. And of course, Zach Braff and Donald Faison are best friends IRL.

Jordan Sullivan was portrayed by Christa Miller. An earlier version of this post incorrectly stated that the character was played by Christa Williams. Sorry Dragon Lady, our bad.
