17 Things You Didn't Know About "Home Alone"

Home Alone was the highest grossing movie in 1990, and to this day it's a Christmas staple. Get pumped for the TV reruns with some new info on this soon-to-be-classic.

    1. Kevin's iconic scream face is based off of Edvard Munch's "The Scream."

    2. Chris Columbus directed the movie.

Yeah, the same Chris Columbus that directed the first two Harry Potter films, Mrs. Doubtfire and Rent.

    3. John Hughes wrote it.

Yeah, the same John Hughes that wrote The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and every other teen angst movie of the 80's.

    4. Buzz's girlfriend was a boy.

Director Chris Columbus thought making fun of a girl this way was mean, so they dressed up the art director's son.

    5. Kevin's home is real.

Kevin's home is actually a real house in Winnetka, Illinois. In March 2012, it was sold for over $1.5 million dollars.

    6. It's in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Home Alone is in the Guinness Book of World Records as "The Highest Box Office Gross Comedy," with an international total adding up to nearly $533,000,000.

    7. Elvis made a cameo...?

There is a conspiracy theory that Elvis (who died 13 years prior to the movie's release) makes an appearance in the film. Supposedly, The King is the bearded man standing behind Kevin's mom while she is yelling at the desk attendant.

    8. Robert De Niro turned down the role of Harry.

Instead, his Goodfellas, Raging Bull, and Casino co-star, Joe Pesci, took on the character.

    9. Joe Pesci gave Macaulay Culkin a scar while filming.

In the scene when Harry bites Kevin's finger, Joe Pesci actually bit Culkin. Apparently, he has a strong jaw.

    10. Daniel Stern wore rubber feet in the scenes where he is supposedly barefoot.

And all those broken ornaments he stepped on? Those were made of candy.

    11. This was an optical illusion.

Chris Columbus put a mirror in front of the camera to make the flames look longer than they actually were.

    12. "Angels with Filthy Souls" isn't a real movie.

Kevin's most useful video tape was actually specially shot footage. They called it "Angels with Filthy Souls," which is a reference to the 1983 mob movie Angels with Dirty Faces.

    13. "Angels with Filthier Souls" was the make-believe sequel featured in "Home Alone 2."

"Angels with Filthier Souls" was the aptly named footage used in Home Alone 2.

    14. Daniel Stern slipped the S-word into the movie.

Both Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci reportedly had trouble avoiding swear words while filming. Next time you watch, listen closely as Marv is retrieving his boot from the doggy door...

    15. The role of Uncle Frank was written for Kelsey Grammar.

Gerry Bamman played the character in Home Alone and Home Alone 2.

    16. Harry Lime was named after an Orson Welles character.

Welles played a character called Harry Lime in the 1949 movie The Third Man.

    17. Culkin is now the same age that Daniel Stern (Marv) was during filming.

    He's 33 years old.
