Tara Hills, a mom of seven in Ottawa, Ontario, was never a fan of vaccinations. She had her three oldest kids partially vaccinated, but her four youngest have had none at all. Blaming it on her lack of trust with the government, big pharma companies and the media, Tara took an anti-vax stance.

Family and friends pressured her and her husband to change their minds, but she didn't waver on her opinion until the recent measles outbreaks. Revisiting the issue and doing some research, she decided vaccinations probably were in the best interest of her kids.

Unfortunately, it was too little, too late. All kids recently developed a dry cough, which progressed into a terrible, vomit-inducing cough. Diagnosis? Whooping cough -- an illness preventable by vaccine.

Now all kids are under quarantine in their home, on antibiotics and on the road to recovery.

Tara took the opportunity to educate other anti-vaxxers by sharing her story in an open letter. You can read the letter here.

In it, she writes, "Right now my family is living the consequences of misinformation and fear. I understand that families in our community may be mad at us for putting their kids at risk. I want them to know that we tried our best to protect our kids when we were afraid of vaccination and we are doing our best now, for everyone’s sake, by getting them up to date. We can’t take it back … but we can learn from this and help others the same way we have been helped."
