In the '60s they were asked to investigate a Raggedy Ann doll that exhibited malicious and frightening behaviour – the doll had been pronounced by a psychic medium as being possessed by the spirit of a girl named Annabelle.

The back story: After her child and gun company-owner husband passed away, Sarah Winchester moved away and decided to build a huge house with the $20 million that she had inherited. The 'Winchester Mystery House' was claimed to be haunted by the ghosts of people killed by Winchester guns.

The back story: In November 1959 four members of the Clutter family were brutally murdered in their home by two ex-convicts, Perry Smith and Richard Hickock. Truman Capote wrote about the events in his novel In Cold Blood, which was later adapted into film.

Writer-director Bryan Bertino was inspired by a number of real-life events, including the Manson family Tate murders and a series of break-ins that happened around Bertino's own home as a child.
