1. First things first: Time to don your tackiest holiday sweater!

You may be an adult now, but there is no reason you can't be as goofy as you ever were. Besides, deep down, you secretly love your tacky ol' sweater and want to show it off.

2. OK, back to being responsible: Set a budget for the holidays, and stick to it.

You'll want to plan ahead how much you intend to spend on gifts, food, travel, etc. It'll add up so fast if you aren't ready for it!

3. When you go shopping, give yourself a time limit beforehand.

The longer you spend in a store, the more money you’ll probably spend. Making a shopping list is also a good idea. Avoid those impulse purchases!

5. Maybe instead of buying gifts, you can offer helpful services to your loved ones.

Taking care of the dishes for a week, doing the laundry... anything works! The cost is next to nothing, but the gift is priceless.

7. Definitely don't waste money on holiday cards — handwrite your own instead!

Holiday cards can be pretty expensive. Besides, sometimes it's actually nicer to get a handwritten letter in the mail anyway.

9. Be a boss and get a real tree for once. You'll be the envy of all your friends.

Yeah, maybe it's not that "responsible," but it looks awesome and will make for a great holiday party. Just get help cleaning it up afterwards and it won't even be a thing.

10. Make your own ornaments instead of buying them!

Not only is it cheaper, but you can turn it into a fun friends and family activity. Throw in some hot cocoa and holiday tunes, and you've got a party!

11. Skip out on going to the movies this year and have a cozy movie night at home.

It's cheaper, you don't have to deal with crazy lines, and you can eat popcorn AND holiday cookies!

12. If you host a party, have people pitch in and help out!

Turn a regular holiday party into a fun collaborative effort by having guests bring their favorite dishes for everyone to share. It'll taste good and help save money!
