I was flying out of Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans to JFK in New York and then onto Germany for a five week study abroad program in the summer of 2015. I was sitting at my gate waiting for my flight to get called with another member of my study abroad group when he said “don’t look now but I think that’s Stephen Colbert over there.”I looked and sure enough it was Mr. Colbert, I tried to approach but was given a stern look by a pretty big dude sitting behind him. I turned around and sat back down, resigning myself to taking really bad photos from my phone. The big guy who had given me the stern look came up to me and my friend and thanked us for respecting Mr. Colbert’s privacy. He then said that when the plane went to board, he would come and discreetly introduce us. True to his word, we all got in line and the man I presume was Mr. Colbert’s body guard beckoned us over. We went and had the best conversation with him! Mr. Colbert was so nice, soft-spoken and just as funny as his on screen persona if not as outlandish. I asked him what he was doing in New Orleans and he said he was there to find a band for his late night show. He even told me who he had picked which was pretty cool of him to disclose that to some random girl in the airport. We chatted for a little while longer about how much I adore him, took a selfie and we boarded the plane. Definitely one of the best celebrity encounters i’ve ever had!
