Michael Caine Just Ended An Eight Year Long Debate Over The Ending Of "Inception"

Does the goddamn top fall or not?

So, Christopher Nolan's 2010 film Inception has one of the most ambiguous, highly-debated endings of all time.

WARNING: There ARE going to be spoilers in this post for a movie that's over eight years old so...get with it, or get gone!

For those not ~in the know~, the film follows a group of con artists who specialize in stealing information from people's minds through their dreams. However, when they are recruited to do the inverse task of planting an idea in a CEO's mind, things go awry fast.

The film ends on an INFAMOUS cliff-hanger, so you're never really sure if Leonardo DiCaprio's character made it back to reality from out of the dream or not, which was frustrating TO SAY THE LEAST.

This is literally the ending shot...Spoilers.

Well, eight years later, we now have a definitive answer thanks to Michael Caine, who revealed a little behind-the-scenes intel while attending a recent screening of the film in London.

“When I got the script for Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it," Caine said. "I said to [Nolan], ‘I don’t understand where the dream is. When is it the dream and when is it reality?'”

"[Nolan] said, ‘Well, when YOU'RE in a scene, it’s reality.’" Caine said. "So, get that— if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.”

And while Caine, who plays DiCaprio's mentor and father-in-law in the film, is not present in a TON of scenes, he IS present in the one that truly matters:

Thus, going on the logic presented by Nolan, because Caine's character IS present in the ending sequence, the ending is NOT a dream. DiCaprio's character DID make it home to his children for real!

So there ya have it, an eight-year-old mystery has officially been solved! Time to go re-watch Inception for the thousandth time with this new information.
