16 Horror Movie Details And Easter Eggs That Are Scarily Awesome

"Oh, cool!" —Me catching these details while watching the movies through my fingers.

We recently asked horror lovers in our BuzzFeed Community, "What's your favorite cool little detail/Easter egg hidden somewhere in a horror movie?" and whew, buddy, they DID NOT disappoint! Here are just a few of the coolest little details spotted:

Also, WARNING: Due to the nature of this post, there are several SPOILERS for these films in this post, so please proceed with caution!

    1. Midsommar (2019)

"In an early scene, while Dani and Christian are arguing in Dani’s apartment, there’s a painting in the background of a girl wearing a crown who is kissing a bear, which outright foreshadows both of their fates at the end of the film."

    2. Insidious (2011)

"When we're following the mother around as she is doing laundry (right before she sees the little boy dancing through the window) she walks RIGHT PAST the little boy standing in the corner near to a coat rack, blending in with all of the coats. It happens so fast that you don't notice him the first time you watch the movie, and even now I get the heebie-jeebies just looking at this screenshot!"

    3. Bride of Chucky (1998)

    Universal Pictures

"When Tiffany goes to the evidence locker to get the remains of Chucky, they also have Jason Voorhees’s hockey mask, Freddy Krueger’s glove, Michael Myers’ mask, Leatherface’s chainsaw, and even the puppets from Puppet Master locked up."

    4. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

"It’s a bit obvious, but if you pause and look at the whiteboard, you see a bunch of nods to different classic horror movie villains."

    5. Goodnight Mommy (2014)

    RADIUS-TWC/Dimension Films

"The mother consistently uses the German word 'du' (the singular form of 'you') when speaking to her two sons. This is foreshadowing of the ending twist because she cannot see her second son, Lukas, or else she would use 'sie' (the plural form of 'you'). For those who haven't seen the film, you find out at the end that his twin died in a car crash, and throughout the film is just a figment of his living brother's imagination."

    6. The Conjuring 2 (2016)

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"I love how you can see the demon Valak’s name throughout the movie before they finally figure it out. Most people have noticed it on the bookshelf, but it appears in other places in the Warrens' house. For example, in their kitchen you can see the letters in pictures and knickknacks behind them, then in another scene it’s carved in the wood behind Lorraine, and her daughter makes a bracelet with that name."

    7. Scream (1996)

    Dimension Films

"When Jamie Kennedy's character (his name in the movie is Randy) is watching the movie Halloween, he keeps yelling, 'Jamie, look behind you!' It has a double, meta meaning because while in the movie he's yelling at Jamie Lee Curtis, Ghostface is actually right behind HIM, so he really should've followed his own warning!"

    8. The Shining (1980)

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"While they’re driving up to the hotel, the 'Dies Irae' theme is playing, which traditionally symbolizes a day of reckoning or wrath."

    9. The Sixth Sense (1999)

    Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

"I actually had a theory the first time I saw this that you could tell that Malcolm was dead from the beginning of the movie because, if you pay attention, he's wearing the same shirt he was shot in the entire movie."

    10. It (2017)

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"When Ben is reading the town's history in the library, the librarian can be seen in the background staring at him, smiling, getting closer with each shot. I only noticed this the second time when I was watching it with my friends and it gave me chills!"

    11. The Ring (2002)

    DreamWorks Pictures

"There’s a scene where Naomi Watts’s character is riding on a ferry boat, notices a horse that is also being transported, and tries to pet the horse. There is a closeup of the horse’s eye, and it's a reference to the closeup that appears on the creepy cassette tape that she, her son, and her ex all watched that doomed them all. It was such a cool moment of foreshadowing!"

    12. The Witch (2015)

"When the two youngest children, Jonas and Mercy, sing their song about the goat, Black Phillip, it hints heavily to the end of the movie when it's revealed that Black Phillip is literally the Devil."

    13. Dead Silence (2007)

    Universal Pictures

"If you look closely, you can see Jigsaw's puppet, Billy, from Saw sitting on the floor."

    14. Pet Sematary (2019)

    Paramount Pictures

In the remake, during Ellie's birthday party, Jud can be heard in the background saying, 'There was a big Saint Bernard who got rabies..." which is a direct reference to Cujo, another work of Stephen King's."

    15. The Thing (1982)

    Universal Pictures

"At the end, MacReady (Kurt Russell) and Childs (Keith David) are talking to each other, questioning if one of them is the creature. As they talk, Childs’ breath doesn’t come out as a cloud in the cold like MacReady’s does, silently revealing that Childs is 'The Thing.' This has even been confirmed by the director, John Carpenter!"

    16. And finally, A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) AND Evil Dead 2 (1987)

    New Line Cinema, Embassy Communications

"Nancy is watching a trailer for Evil Dead while trying to stay awake so, in Evil Dead 2, the director (Sam Raimi) returned the favor by hanging Freddy's razor glove on the wall of the toolshed when Ash uses the chainsaw."
