21 Of The Most Iconic Musical Moments In Otherwise Nonmusical Films

WARNING: Only read this post if you feel like being in a good mood.

We recently asked movie lovers in our BuzzFeed Community to name the BEST musical moment in an otherwise nonmusical film and, WHEW, they did not disappoint. Here are just a few of the best responses:

    1. Mean Girls (2004)

    Paramount Pictures

"The ENTIRE talent show sequence is absolutely iconic, particularly 'Jingle Bell Rock.' I found it so funny when Gretchen kicked the boombox into that guy's face. Extra points for the plastics' unison thigh slap."

    2. 13 Going on 30 (2004)

    Columbia Pictures

"The 'Thriller' dance scene at the magazine party! Everything about it is absolutely perfect."

    3. Beetlejuice (1988)

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"When they all start singing 'Day-O' out of nowhere at dinner. It's hilarious to see everyone’s face be like, 'What the heck is happening' as their bodies involuntarily join in the dancing. Plus, Catherine O’Hara can do no wrong!"

    4. 500 Days Of Summer (2009)

    Fox Searchlight

"The dance number to 'You Make My Dreams Come True' is one of my favorite movie moments ever. It perfectly showcases Tom's pure, unadulterated happiness that morning...and the contrast of his mood on the worst morning set to the same song is hilarious."

    5. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

    Fox Searchlight

"Definitely, hands down, the song and dance scene at the end of this movie to 'Jai Ho.' This movie made me cry SO much, so the release when he gets the girl after he won millions was very uplifting. PLUS, it was a nice nod to Bollywood movies."

    6. My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)

    TriStar Pictures

"When they sing 'I Say A Little Prayer For You' at the never fails to put me in a good mood!"

    7. We’re the Millers (2013)

    New Line Cinema

"They all sing 'Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls' at one point and the son absolutely KILLS Left-Eye's rap. It's so funny."

    8. Risky Business (1983)

    Warner Bros.

"I'm obviously referring to the moment when a young Tom Cruise dances and lip sync 'Old Time Rock and Roll.' That scene is when ALL of Hollywood took notice and recognized his star power."

    9. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

    Buena Vista Pictures

The most obvious (right) answer of all time would be Heath Ledger singing 'Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.'"

    10. Shrek 2 (2004)

"Jennifer Saunders absolutely KILLS IT with her cover of 'Holding Out for a Hero.' It's just as good as the Bonnie Tyler version, if not better."

    11. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

    Marvel Studios

"The opening dance montage to 'Come and Get Your Love.' A dance sequence in a Marvel movie? Yes, please."

    12. This Is the End (2013)

    Sony Pictures Releasing

"Jay Baruchel wishes for the Backstreet Boys in heaven and they come out of nowhere singing 'Everybody (Backstreet's Back).' Poetic cinema, honestly."

    13. Wayne's World (1992)

    Paramount Pictures

"The obvious winner will forever and always be when they belt out 'Bohemian Rhapsody' in the car, without a doubt. I dare you to watch that scene and NOT sing along/head bang."

    14. 27 Dresses (2008)

    20th Century Fox

"I still can’t get over the bar scene. Now, whenever I hear 'Bennie and the Jets,' I can’t stop thinking 'electric BOOBS' instead of 'electric BOOTS.'

    15. Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

    Fox Searchlight

"110% when Napoleon does his dance number to 'Canned Heat.' That man high-key has got the moves."

    16. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

    Paramount Pictures

"When Audrey Hepburn sings 'Moon River.' It’s such a beautiful song and gives us a little more insight into her character. It comes so unexpectedly — just her sitting outside of her window on the fire escape with her hair up in a towel. Plus, it’s ACTUALLY Hepburn singing."

    17. The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

    Universal Pictures

"When they randomly have a mini-Hair ode and sing 'Age of Aquarius'/'Let the Sunshine In.' I had sung that song with my choir back in high school and I definitely wasn’t expecting it to show up in a random comedy, so the surprise mixed with nostalgia made me DIE laughing. Plus, the dancing makes it 10 times funnier."

    18. The First Wives Club (1996)

    Paramount Pictures

"The ending when the crew sings 'You Don’t Own Me.' They don’t play the whole song in a big musical number-style way like some other movies, but it looks like so much fun and I have never wanted anything more than to make that trio a quartet and skip down the street in my white attire with them."

    19. Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)

    Buena Vista Pictures

"Jessica Rabbit's cover of 'Why Don't You Do Right' is equal parts iconic and spectacular."

    20. Monsters, Inc. (2001)

"This is incredibly random, but Mike Wazowski’s spontaneous musical number that he's literally inventing while he Sully and he are arguing is the funniest thing ever. I also love the fact that Pixar THEN turned it into a mini-musical during the closing credits!"

    21. And finally, EuroTrip (2004)

"There's zero competition, 'Scotty Doesn’t Know' from this movie is the best musical scene ever. Not to mention, Matt Damon’s iconic cameo as a punk singer!"
