What's The Scariest Horror Film That Most People Don't Realize Is Based On True Events?

"Based on a...wait, what?! Turn it off!" —Me, watching these movies.

Horror movies are freaky enough on their own without having to be anchored in reality...but is there anything more terrifying than finding out that an already terrifying horror movie is actually inspired by something that really happened?!

So — with that in mind — what's a horror film that a lot of people don't realize is actually based on a true story/inspired by true events?

Maybe you're often shocked when you realize a lot of people don't know that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) is based on IRL serial killer Ed Gein's crimes.

Or perhaps it's a deeper cut, like Wolf Creek (2005), that you couldn't believe was actually inspired by real-life events.

Heck, maybe it was YOU who didn't realize that A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) was actually inspired by police reports of teenagers dying mysteriously in their sleep.
