Steve Warned Bucky Beforehand About His Surprise Decision At The End Of "Avengers: Endgame"

Stucky fans, this one's for you.

Hi, do I still need to do a spoiler warning for this movie??? Idk...here's one anyway, just to be safe — SPOILER ALERT, PLEASE JUST GO RENT THIS MOVIE ALREADY.

    Marvel Studios

Okay, cool, now we can get right into it.

So at the tail end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers — aka Captain America aka Cap aka Mr. I Miss Your Beard So Much — goes back in time to return all of the Infinity Stones to their rightful locations, then, in a bit of a twist, chooses to remain in the past to live out his life with Peggy Carter, his one true love.

    Marvel Studios

When Steve doesn't IMMEDIATELY return after the time travel sequence ends, Sam Wilson — aka Falcon aka Mr. I'm The Captain Now — is visibly and vocally concerned, demanding Bruce Banner bring him back ASAP.

    Marvel Studios

But Bucky — aka Steve's life-long best friend aka Mr. Expert Eyeliner Wearer — seems calm and calculated by comparison, and not at all worried that his bestie isn't back yet.

This odd reaction has lead to one of the BIGGEST questions fans have been wondering about since the film premiered: Did Bucky KNOW that Steve planned to stay in the past to be with Peggy?

    Marvel Studios

Well, according to Comicbook.com, the film's DVD commentary revealed/confirmed the official answer: He sure did.

    Marvel Studios

"Now clearly Bucky knows something here, right?" director Joe Russo asked, as Bucky and Steve hug goodbye.

    Marvel Studios

"Yeah, I think it's clear from Sebastian's performance here," writer Stephen McFeely said. "He's been clued into Steve's decision."

    Marvel Studios

"Why [else] would Bucky say, 'I'm gonna miss you,'" McFeely said. "Especially if it's only going to be five seconds?"

    Marvel Studios

"Yeah, he knows," Russo agreed. "Now, we don't know the extent of what Steve told him, but clearly he told him something."

    Marvel Studios

"Yeah, I don't think he said, 'I'll go sit on the bench over there,'" McFeely continued. "I think he's certainly surprised to see that [part]."

    Marvel Studios

So there you have it! While Bucky may not have expected to see his closest friend return in full grandpa mode, he definitely knew he'd be choosing to "get a life," as Tony Stark put it...

    Marvel Studios

So please excuse me while I go softly sob at the beautiful relationship between these two characters and count down the days until fall 2020, when The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres on Disney+.
