28 More Movies People Watched With Zero Expectations, But Ended Up Loving

Stop! Reading! Wikipedia! Pages! Before! You! Watch! The! Movie!

We recently took a look at a viral Reddit thread where people shared movies they went into knowing nothing about, but came out of really enjoying. These awesome answers sparked even MORE great responses from our very own BuzzFeed Community! Here are just a few of the best:

    1. Isn't It Romantic (2019)

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"My friends and I were looking for something mindless to put on in the background while we played on our phones and talked. Instead, we ended up actively watching this movie, and laughing a lot more than we expected. It's not very deep, but it IS cute, clever, and nothing in it (especially the actors) takes itself too seriously."

    2. Oldboy (2003)

    Show East

"This remains one of the best movies I have ever watched. I randomly found it one night on TV and fell in love with the music and the complexity of the story. The ending left me breathless. 100% recommended."

    olivianova

    3. Drive (2011)

    FilmDistrict

"I thought it was going to be an action-packed, car chase type of movie, and instead I walked away with a great love story PLUS one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard."

    4. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

    New Line Cinema

"My dad and my brothers — who had all read the books — went to see it together as like a 'guys' day' type of thing. I went to see it with my mom because she was feeling left out, since she had ALSO read the book. I had never read the series, but I became a huge fan by the end of the movie and still am."

    5. Overlord (2018)

    Paramount Pictures

"I love horror movies and a bunch of Facebook groups were talking about how this one wasn't doing well at the box office. I went to see it, fully expecting a low-budget horror that relied heavily on jump scares. Instead, I was shocked by how good it was. The opening sequence on the plane was nearly as gripping as Saving Private Ryan's was, and the creature effects were great. It wasn't perfect, but it's still a favorite of mine."

    6. Spy (2015)

    20th Century Fox

"This might sound dumb, but I had taken a sick day from work and really wasn't feeling well, so I decided to just watch whatever was on Netflix. I picked this movie and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Plus, the comedy distracted me from how terrible I felt, and I definitely appreciated it."

    7. Apocalypto (2006)

    Walt Disney Studios

"When my husband said he was dragging me to watch a two-hour-long war epic where everyone speaks an ancient language, I thought he was nuts. Turns out, I was wrong. It’s an edge-of-your-seat, non-stop action movie with a genuinely harrowing ending. Check it out if you haven't seen it!"

    8. Good Will Hunting (1997)

    Miramax Films

"My therapist actually recommended it to me, and I was expecting some cheesy life lesson movie. What I got instead was so much more than that, and it's now one of my favorite movies."

    cosmohernandez

    9. The Sixth Sense (1999)

    Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

"I am possibly the one person on Earth who saw this movie in theaters before I heard anything about it with zero expectations. Needless to say, my mind was blown."

    elizabethg20

    10. Ratatouille (2007)

    Pixar

"I watched this when it was on TV on a whim. I wasn't engaged with it at first because it has a stupid name (why name a movie after a vegetable stew???) and the protagonist is a literal rat. Then I realized it's a movie about friendship and making your dreams come true no matter what. I love it."

    silencesilence

    11. Sorry to Bother You (2018)

    Mirror Releasing

"In the trailers, it looked like a fun and irreverent comedy — which it is — but it’s also an incredible satire commenting on capitalism and corporate greed. It’s awesome."

    reginaldcartwright

    12. Swing Kids (2018)

    Next Entertainment World

"This is a Korean movie that my husband and I started watching, thinking it was an uplifting story about a boy who gets a better life after the Korean war because of his tap dancing...and boy, were we wrong. It's so much darker and more gruesome than you'd expect a movie full of tap dancing to be, but it's amazing."

    kimmjimenez1705

    13. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"I only saw it because my boyfriend wanted to, and he paid for my ticket. I knew nothing about this movie (or any of the previous ones), and thought it would be dumb. It turned out to be the best movie that I saw that whole year. The story and world just captured me, and Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy are fantastic in it."

    saraudsen

    14. Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

    Warner Bros.

"I went to see it thinking it would just be another rom-com, but it had such incredible dramatic moments, and the ending left me in tears."

    emilyp46ba393d4

    15. The Lion King (1993)

    Walt Disney Studios

"I was 12 when this came out, and I 'didn’t want to see a kid movie.' My mom made me go with her, my younger siblings, her friends, and all of their kids. I was the oldest out of the nine kids that went and was BEYOND pissed about being there, but — as the movie progressed — I absolutely loved it! I believe this was the first movie that ever made me cry."

    nataliejann

    16. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

    Lionsgate

"I had no idea what it was about and thought it would just be another stereotypical teen horror film. I quite literally couldn’t have been more wrong."

    stephaniem49eb94563

    17. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)

    Universal Pictures

"I saw it with a friend when we were bored one afternoon, just looking to pass the time on a rainy day. I hadn’t even seen the original Fast and Furious at this point. OMG, I ended up loving it and have probably seen it 10 times since then."

    nicoleg4644d9a40

    18. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010)

    Magnet Releasing

"I knew NOTHING about this movie when I put it on, and I've never laughed so hard in my life. My face actually hurt from laughing so hard."

    m44a1d3532

    19. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

    The Weinstein Company

"I was at the theater out of boredom and wasn’t sure what to see. A woman came out and randomly asked me what I was going to see, so I told her I didn’t know. She insisted I go see this and praised how amazing Jennifer Lawrence was in it. I knew absolutely nothing about, but I figured what the heck? I absolutely loved it."

    tiffanyalexandraw

    20. Midsommer (2019)

    A24

"I just saw this last week! I didn't know anything about it, but I really liked it. It was very different than anything I could've anticipated. I've thought about it a lot since I saw it. The casting was great and so was the location."

    jeni67

    21. Garden State (2004)

    Fox Searchlight Pictures

"I was a fan of Zach Braff from Scrubs (of course), so when trailers came out for this I thought it might be interesting. Halfway through the movie I started bawling and didn’t stop crying about it for two days! My poor husband thought it broke me! It just spoke to me on some deeper level."

    grant101010

    22. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

    Fox Searchlight Pictures

"My dad bought this and I ended up watching it out of boredom one day. It ended up being one of my favorite films. I even made my Wind Symphony bandmates watch it on the coach bus on our way to a performance, and they all fell in love with it, as well."

    katek4161e6ae2

    23. Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018)

    Paramount Pictures

"I went to the theater to distract myself (I had just broken up with a guy). This was all that was playing. I had never watched any Mission Impossible movies and I absolutely loved it."

    pazini90

    24. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)

    DreamWorks Pictures

"All I knew about this movie was that Will Ferrell was in it. I hadn’t seen any trailers, I just knew I liked him from SNL. I had no idea what to expect, and I still remember sitting in the theater and thinking, 'WTF did we just get ourselves into?!' We laughed so hard at this dumb movie, and I still quote it pretty regularly."

    melissas47e08a62a

    25. Ant-Man (2015)

    Marvel Studios

"I thought the premise to this movie was the dumbest thing they could come up with, and I had no interest in seeing it while it was out. I ended up in the hospital a short time later and had nothing else to do, and this was one of the newer releases they had available. So, I gave it a go. It was hilarious and made my stay a little easier. This is now one of my favorite Marvel movies."

    26. The Hangover (2009)

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"I went with some friends thinking it was going to be just another dumb, raunchy comedy that wasn't clever or even terrifically funny. To this day, I still haven't laughed that hard in a movie theater EVER!"

    angelam4fd0e765e

    27. The Nice Guys (2016)

    Warner Bros. Pictures

"I just knew this had Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in it. I hadn't seen any trailers or anything before I got a ticket, and I expected a bunch of action...but it was surprisingly REALLY funny, too. It's such an underrated film!"

    yanely

    28. Get Out (2017)

    Universal Pictures

"I went to see this on a whim. I had no idea it was opening weekend. I went online, saw it had a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score at the time, and read an extremely short summary that said, 'A man visiting his girlfriend's family gets a trip from hell.' I hadn't seen a single trailer for it, and knew nothing about it other than that very short summary. Needless to say, it is still one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life."
