19 Life-Saving Hangover Breakfasts To Try In NYC

AKA "weekend plans."

Posted on

1. French Toast Grilled Cheese at Shopsin's

Listen up, people. THIS IS A FRENCH TOAST GRILLED CHEESE. Shopsin's is a cult NYC favorite, and this is only part of the reason why. Their menu is by far the largest and most amazing thing I've ever seen. You could go here every morning for the rest of your life and never have the same thing twice.

2. Egg and Cheese on a Roll at literally any bodega

I know that some people swear one bodega has a better sandwich than another place, but tbh when I'm hungover literally the last thing I want to do is Google "best egg and cheese on a roll". Instead I will stumble to the nearest bodegs to get my fix. ANYTHING WILL DO. Always ask for hot sauce.

3. Dutch Baby Pancake with Maple Syrup at Prune

Sometimes this comes with a berry situation, depending on the season. Order it with a Chicago Matchbox Bloody Mary and you'll have a new lease on life.

4. "Two Eggs, Any Style" at Cup & Saucer

I have a thing with bacon never being crispy enough, and this place always nails it. This greasy-spoon Chinatown spot has some of the best people watching in all of New York with some A+ 'Gramming light. Go before somebody buys the building and replaces it with condos. HURRY.

5. Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese on Sesame Bagel at Black Seed Bagels

Nobody asked me, but I think that these are the most Instagrammable bagels in New York. But that's not why they are on this list. They are on this list because their Montreal style wood-oven bagels are fucking delicious, and when you eat one after a night of doing alcohol, you immediately feel like a real human again.

6. Chocolate Chip Pancakes at Waverly Restaurant

The best part of being an adult is doing shit like eating chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, and the best place to do that is Waverly Restaurant.

7. Chicken Biscuit at Pies 'N' Thighs

There isn't anything here that isn't awesome, but I do dream of this chicken biscuit (fried chicken sandwiched between one of New York's best biscuit), slathered with honey butter and too much hot sauce. They are also the perfect size to get one to go and put it in your purse or pocket. Trust me on that one.

8. Egg Sandwich on Challah Toast from B&H Dairy

I'm going to resist the urge to make a "challah" joke here, but you should definitely...okay, never mind.

But just go here, sit at the counter, and stuff your face with this sandwich. I'm not going to say this is the *ulitmate* hangover cure, but it's up there.

9. Latkes with Sunny Side Up Eggs and Lox at Russ and Daughters

If I had to sum up this place in one word, it would be "praise hands emoji". Of everything in the fried potato world, nothing heals quite like the latke. Bloody Marys are excellent, too.

10. Monkey Bread with Cream at Joseph Leonard's

If I had a dime for every time I came here hungover, I would be a millionaire. The move is to get one of these for the table, plus an order of their giant potato hashbrown and country fried bacon for yourself. Don't forget the holy trinity of beverages: bloody mary, coffee, and ice water.

11. Bacon, Egg and Cheese on a Croissant at Veselka

The only thing better than a bacon, egg, and cheese on a roll is a bacon, egg, and cheese on a croissant. Veselka is the best place to spend a hangover though, no matter what you order.

12. "Avocado Del Sur" with Flatbread and Poached Eggs at El Rey

Just a few bites into this avocado toast interpretation and you'll feel right as rain. Basically everything here is insanely delicious, a little weird, and will make your body feel excellent and strong after you eat it.

13. Dim Sum (specifically Egg Custard Buns) at Golden Unicorn

As any New Yorker knows, dim sum is one of the best breakfasts you can have, hangover not required. The only way it gets better? When the dim sum is cute AF.

14. Huevos Rancheros at Clinton Street Baking Company

Yeah, the pancakes and waffles here are wonderful, but the real move here is to order the huevos rancheros. All that chorizo will fix you *right up*.

15. Omelette and French Fries at Red Flame Diner

If you work within a 10-block radius of the Times Square, there is literally no better hangover breakfast (or lunch, for that matter) than an omelette and french fries at Red Flame. They *do* deliver, but when you're at your desk and "just can't," the Flame is there, ready to welcome you with open arms.

16. Coffee and Donuts at Dough

If you don't think coffee and donuts count as breakfast, you need to take a look in the mirror and ask yourself why you hate joy.

These donuts are fucking awesome, and their flavors ~change with the seasons~, which means you always have an excuse to go back.

17. Eggs with Israeli Salad and Pita at Café Orlin

These eggs are my favorite thing there, because they come with the most delicious thing on the planet- LABNE. It's kind of like yogurt-cheese, and it should be eaten with every meal. They also have an awesome smoked salmon benedict and shakshuka.

18. Matzo Brie at Eisenberg's

If you didn't grow up with matzo brie like I did, this might not get your juices flowing– but basically this is like a savory french toast kinda thing. Matzo boards are soaked in eggs and cooked with caramelized onions. Make sure you request a side of sour cream on the side.

19. Breakfast Bowls at Dimes

Sometimes you need something wholesome to right all that wrong. For that, there is nothing better than a bowl full of ~superfoods~ and fruits and crunchy things and seeds and happiness and sunshine and beautiful people, all of which you can find here at Dimes.
