This Teacher Refused To Grade Students Who Didn't Turn In Their Work

“Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life! I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50% for not handing anything in.”

A Florida teacher took a major stand when it came to students completely slacking off on a school project.

This is Diana Tirado. She tells WPTV that she lost her job when she refused to give students credit for something they didn’t even turn in.

"Teaching is a calling for me.”

She started teaching 8th-grade history at West Gate in Port Saint Lucie in Florida just last month.

That’s where she assigned students to complete an explorer notebook project, which many of them ended up not turning it in.

Upon consulting the student and parent handbook, she found what she described as the school’s “no zero policy.”

That means that if students don’t turn in their assignments, the teachers still had to give them a 50.

Diana didn’t agree, so she said she was fired.

She wrote this message to her students on her last day, snapped a photo, and shared it on Facebook, where it got tons of attention.

The message reads: “Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life! I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50% for not handing anything in.”

A lot of people are agreeing with Diana and her point of view.

@WISH_TV 50% for trying is okay but 50% for doing nothing and turning nothing in.....WRONG. A sad rule that teaches students nothing about work ethic and life. Don't know any employers who pay you to stay home and do nothing. What message our we sending with this DUMB policy?

They even commended Diana for taking such a bold stand, even if it cost her a job.

@WISH_TV This is appalling. Proud of this teacher for her stance on this ridiculous policy.

@WISH_TV If there isn't more to the story than being reported, it is a crying shame that this teacher was fired and such a policy exists. It's a policy that fosters laziness and falls far short of teaching/upholding values and work ethic.

Now, she hopes this unfortunate situation somehow motivates policy change.

She said, ”I’m so upset because we have a nation of kids that are expecting to get paid and live their life just for showing up and it's not real."
