So, today, you just moved into a house with two enormous flower boxes, and even though you never were into gardening before, you decide to give it a shot. One of the boxes has soil from the people who lived there before, which is a relief because you're n

You notice one lovely spring afternoon that the flowers in your preferred color are sprouting up like gang busters, strong and healthy and GORGEOUS. Even the weakest ones are making it to a middle height. Unfortunately, in the other box, things are a bit.

The flowers then go to seed, dropping their progeny in the same soil in which they were growing, and the next year, the same thing happens with the flowers: one box scraggly, one box vibrant. What do you do?

If you WEREN'T the gardener, but a friend of the gardener observing his/her plight, what would you suggest?

Okay, so...there's the initial/historical injustice established before you began the activity: separating the seed into 2 different types of soil in the first place. Then, there's the structure of the two flower boxes keeps the soils separate, not allowing one to gain nutrients from the other. THEN there are the choices that continue solidifying this structure: not addressing the differences between the soils over the years. And, of course, there's the role of preference. We're not talking personally, here, we're talking about community. Historically, a favorite was picked (for lots, and lots, and lots of reasons, some logical AND awful, some just awful). But in any case, as illustrated here, the initial preference of color/type--the favoritism, or assumption that one color is better than the other, may contribute to a blindness about the difference between the SOILS, which is the real problem that needs to be addressed.
 _Non-metaphor definition_: Institutionalized racism manifests itself both in material conditions (differential access to quality education, sound housing, gainful employment, medical facilities, etc.) and in access to power (representation in government, access to information--including one's own history, resources). The ORIGINS of the relationship between socioeconomic status and race in the United States is in specific, sometimes long ago historical events (different soils, choosing favorites), but it PERSISTS because of contemporary structural factors that perpetuate the problem (flower boxes).

Stuck Inside and/or Addressing Institutionalized Racism

Okay, so...**personally mediated racism** is rooted in _institutionalized racism_, but it's more active, more what we associate with the term RACISM. 
So first of all, _institutionalization_: there's the initial/historical injustice established before you began the activity: separating the seed into 2 different types of soil in the first place. Then, there's the structure of the two flower boxes keeps the soils separate, not allowing one to gain nutrients from the other. THEN there are the choices that continue solidifying this structure: not addressing the differences between the soils over the years. And, of course, there's the role of preference. We're not talking personally, here, we're talking about community. Historically, a favorite was picked (for lots, and lots, and lots of reasons, some logical AND awful, some just awful). But in any case, as illustrated here, the initial preference of color/type--the favoritism, or assumption that one color is better than the other, may contribute to a blindness about the difference between the SOILS, which is the real problem that needs to be addressed. 
Where **personally mediated racism** comes in is when, disdaining one color of flowers because they look so poor and scraggly (not their fault, as it turns out), and pluck those blossoms off before they can even go to seed. Or when a seed from a pink flower has been blown into the rich soil and you pluck it out before it can establish itself. 
_Non-metaphor definition_: personally mediated racism is differential assumptions about the abilities, motives, and intentions of others according to their race, and differential ACTIONS toward others according to race. It can be intentional as well as unintentional, but it could manifest as any or all of the following: lack of respect, suspicion, devaluation, scapegoating, or dehumanization.

Stuck Inside and/or Addressing Personally Mediated Racism

Okay, so...**internalized racism** is a result (at least most of the time) of a combination of institutionalized racism and personally mediated racism.

Then, there's the structure of the two flower boxes keeps the soils separate, not allowing one to gain nutrients from the other. **Internalized racism** this occurs when that bee came along, about to pollinate one color of flower and that same color says "Nooooo, don't bring me more of that pink pollen! I want the red stuff! Look at them grow, look at what they get to do, so tall and strong and everything!" Essentially, that color of flower has internalized the belief that the OTHER color is better, because over there, in the other flower box, things are flourishing. 
_Non-metaphor definition:_ Internalized racism is defined as acceptance by members of the stigmatized/oppressed races of negative messages about THEIR OWN abilities and worth. It manifests as not believing in others who look like them, and not believing in themselves/accepting limitations to one's own full humanity.
