25 Quotes That Inspired "This Is 40"

Judd Apatow's film "This Is 40" came out last December but I think it is safe to say we're all still talking about it. From the scene where Paul Rudd can't cancel his party because he already paid the catering company to when Leslie Mann only has a hundred dollar bill in her purse to the Ryan Adams cameo that ultimately saves their marriage, this comedic yarn about love and arguing is a future classic. Here we trace the inspiration for the film!

"Everytime you think you're walking you're just moving the ground/

Everytime you think you're talking you're just moving your mouth/

Everytime you're looking you're just looking down." -Modest Mouse

4.

"It is the characteristic of privilege and of every privileged position to kill the mind and heart of men. The privileged man, whether practically or economically, is a man depraved in mind and heart." -Mikhail Bakunin

6.

"Poor human nature, what horrible crimes have been committed in thy name! Every fool, from king to policeman, from the flatheaded parson to the visionless dabbler in science, presumes to speak authoritatively of human nature. The greater the mental charlatan, the more definite his insistence on the wickedness and weaknesses of human nature. Yet, how can any one speak of it today, with every soul in a prison, with every heart fettered, wounded, and maimed?" -Emma Goldman

8.

“Consider the subtleness of the sea; how its most dreaded creatures glide under water, unapparent for the most part, and treacherously hidden beneath the loveliest tints of azure. Consider also the devilish brilliance and beauty of many of its most remorseless tribes, as the dainty embellished shape of many species of sharks. Consider, once more, the universal cannibalism of the sea; all whose creatures prey upon each other, carrying on eternal war since the world began." -Herman Melville

10.

"The supreme mystery of despotism, its prop and stay, is to keep men in a state of deception, and with the specious title of religion to cloak the fear by which they must be held in check, so that they will fight for their servitude as if for salvation." -Baruch Spinoza

13.

"You are invisible, limpid, transparent. You no longer exist. Across the passing hours, the succession of days, the procession of the seasons, the flow of time, you survive without joy and without sadness. Without a future and without a past. Just like that: simply, self evidently, like a drop of water forming on a drinking tap on a landing." -Georges Perec

15.

"Some day, my son, you are going to learn that the two greatest joys of being a man are beating the hell out of someone and getting the hell beaten out of you, good night." -Richard Price
