The CCTV footage appears to show the victim in a tense conversation, when another man steps up and punches him on the side of the head, knocking him to the ground.

The assault occurred outside a convenience store on East Row, Civic.

The victim was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery on his jaw.

A man in his twenties from Braddon is now assisting police with their investigations, after the video was widely circulated on social media on Friday.

Police are still appealing for people who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

Alcohol-fuelled violence is a huge issue in Australia at the moment. Earlier this week, 18-year-old water polo player Cole Miller was killed by a one-punch attack in Brisbane.

New South Wales implemented 1:30am lockout laws following the one-punch death of Sydney teenager Daniel Christie in 2013, and the Queensland and ACT governments are looking to follow suit.

Following Christie's death, his family issued a statement calling on people to refer to the one-punch attack as a "coward punch" over the popular term "king hit".

Ninety people were killed in one-punch assaults between 2000 and 2012, with alcohol a lead contributing factor, according to a study by Monash University.
