Australians "Heartbroken" After Camp Gallipoli In Sydney Washed Out

UPDATE: An event offering the opportunity to "camp out under the stars like our brave ANZACs" postponed due to sodden ground has been moved to a new location.

Camp Gallipoli is billed as "a once in a lifetime opportunity" to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing by "sleeping out under the stars as the original Anzacs did 100 years ago."

Activities at the Sydney event include a concert starring Jon Stevens and Mahalia Barnes, a screening of Russell Crowe's Gallipoli film The Water Diviner and a Dawn Service.

Attendees seeking the authentic ANZAC experience could also buy drinks at a bar, and dine on braised chicken and vegetarian eggplant moussaka. Limited edition swags for camping were also available for purchase.

But on Thursday morning, organisers have had to call off the event due to bad weather.

A spokesperson for the event told BuzzFeed News that it was a difficult decision, but due to the recent Sydney storms, "Centennial Park is a foot deep underwater."

In an official statement on the Camp Gallipoli Facebook page, organisers said it would have been "irresponsible" to allow the Sydney event to go ahead on Friday.

It's believed the event will be moved to a date later in the year.

UPDATE: The organisers have found a new home for the event, at the nearby Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park.

The Camp Gallipoli Foundation says the decision followed an "outpouring of support" for the event to go ahead.

"We are just so pleased that we are still able to offer people a unique and commemorative Camp Gallipoli event and we look forward to hosting all the attendees at The Entertainment Quarter on Friday night," said the foundation's CEO Chris Fox.

A spokesperson for the event told BuzzFeed News some parts of the event would now be held indoors. Attendees will still have the option of sleeping under the stars, ANZAC style.

Refunds will also be offered to people who can no longer attend due to the change in venue.

The announcement also drew criticism on Twitter, with people pointing out the irony of an event that was meant to mirror the ANZAC experience being cancelled due to wet weather.

Camp Gallipoli "postponed" in Sydney because of wet weather. Just like the real thing, right?

authentic Anzac experience not comfortable enough apparently

Considering Camp Gallipoli's ads - which sold it as an authentic ANZAC experience - its cancellation due to rain is pretty hilarious.
