Australians Will Basically Live Forever By 2055

Who run the world? Old people!

Australians will live longer than ever before, according to the federal government's intergenerational report released Thursday.

This has some huge consequences for Australia in the future. Here are some of the projections for what Australia will look like in the year 2055...

There will be DOUBLE the amount of people in Australia aged 65+ than there are today.

Thumbs up if you like being alive!

By the year 2055, the average Aussie woman will live to be 96.6 years old.

That's up from a life expectancy of 93.6 for a girl born today.

The average Aussie man will live to be 95.1 years old.

That's up from an average life expectancy for males of 91.5 years old.

And a whopping 40,000 Australians will be aged 100 or more!

"I have to write how many letters to the Antipodeans now?!"

(Yes, this is assuming that Australia will still be in the Commonwealth, that Elizabeth II will still be on the throne and that she will be sending centenarians signed pictures of her own face.)

That's not even accounting for medical research breakthroughs. The report says some experts have suggested life expectancy in excess of 140 years!

Treasurer Joe Hockey says the report is about making preparations now to ensure future generations have a better quality of life than we have already.

The report says improvements in health mean that Australia's ageing population will be more active in 2055. But this doesn't necessarily mean more time tooling around in campervans and having epic bingo marathons.

The Treasurer says older Australians will need to stay in the workforce for longer to support the economy.

Mr Hockey told the Daily Telegraph, "We need a call to arms for a grey army. We want you. We want you at the front. Not grey nomads but a grey army of workers."

The report goes on to make suggestions for taxation, spending and addressing the budget deficit. You can watch the Treasurer's speech about it below.

The opposition has dismissed the report as a "highly political document" that is just being used to set up the next budget.

And if you think you're young and this doesn't affect you, think again. People born in 1990 will be 65 in 2055. Which means... WE ARE THE OLD PEOPLE IN THE REPORT!
