15 Words That Have A Completely Different Meaning During Fashion Week

1. Show

What it means: A specific display of a film, opera, or stage play

What it means during fashion week: Waiting in the dark for forty-five minutes to watch a ten minute parade.

2. Season

What it means: A calendrical method of dividing a year into four sections, usually characterized by weather.

What it means during fashion week: FW, SS, Resort and a dozen other microseasons; determines whether you're seeing moodily-toned sweaters or actual colors on the runway.

3. Tent

What it means: A portable living space.

What it means during fashion week: Where the fashion shows are. Be forewarned that they are NOT REAL TENTS.

4. Swag

What it means: A certain je ne sais quoi that cool people have.

What it means during fashion week: A magic bag filled with anything from fresh seaweed to invisible underpants. You just don't know until you open it up.

5. Collection

What it means: A bunch of stamps or rocks or Pokémon cards or whatever.

What it means during fashion week: A designer's lifeblood, writ in fabric out on the runway.

6. Lunch

What it means: A meal eaten in the middle of the day.

What it means during fashion week: Literally whatever you can get your hands on. Nuts, berries, a handful of gravel— whatever it takes to keep you going.

7. Campers

What it means: Outdoorsy folk who like to sleep under the stars.

What is means during fashion week: People who hang out around Lincoln Center to watch (and participate) in the street style fun.

8. Look

What it means: To gaze in a general direction.

What it means during fashion week: The carefully planned, head-to-toe ensemble of any given person on the runway or off.

9. Front Row

What it means: Pretty good seats that you probably paid a lot for.

What it means during fashion week: The untouchable/terrifying people who can make or break your career in a split second.

10. Party

What it means: A gathering of friends, usually with music and booze.

What it means during fashion week: A gathering of industry people, models, and crashers that most people spend five minutes at before hopping to the next one in a panic.

11. Line

What it means: A geometrical concept that connects two points.

What it means during fashion week: The collective name for a designer's contribution to society at large.

12. Hub

What it means: The center of a wheel.

What it means during fashion week: It's so far. It just so, so far.

13. Industry

What it means: The heart of the global economy.

What it means during fashion week: The thread that keeps fashion people together. "Oh you work in the industry? I work in the industry."

14. Presentation

What it means: Getting in front of a group of people and saying stuff.

What it means during fashion week: An alternative method of showing clothes, where you wonder exactly how much or how little the models are being paid just to stand there...and not move.....for a whole hour.

15. Week

What it means: Seven days.

What it means during fashion week: All day, every day. It's always fashion week somewhere!
