Kelly Clarkson Explained Why She Wasn't A Coach On This Season Of "The Voice"

"It’s obviously been a rough couple years."

You won't be seeing Kelly Clarkson on the upcoming season of The Voice — and she's got a pretty good reason.

Earlier this year, Kelly confirmed that Camila Cabello would be taking her place while she sat out of season 22, but she didn't explain why.

It turns out that Kelly just really needed a break after a difficult few years, which included her tumultuous divorce.

"I hadn’t had a minute and it’s obviously been a rough couple years so it was really important to me to shut down for a minute," Kelly said during an appearance on the Today show.

And while she knows it's not common for people to have the luxury of taking a summer off, she says she really appreciated the chance to offer her children some normalcy.

"The kids were with me and their dad...It was nice because they usually have to travel a lot because of our separation, we were both in Montana so I think my kids felt a little more centered as well," Kelly shared.

As for what Kelly and the kids did with her time off? Plenty of outdoor activies.

"I literally four-wheeled in the mountains and walked along [the water]," Kelly said. "My sister, my nephew and I, and a couple friends literally spent the whole summer in the mountains, getting out in nature."
