Jane Fonda Did Something Really Special During Her Golden Globes Acceptance Speech And People Loved It

"Art has always been not just in step with history, but has led the way."

One of the major highlights of last night's Golden Globes was the moment Jane Fonda was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award and it wasn't just because of her lifetime achievements — it was because of what she said in her speech.

In a moment that recipients usually reflect on their career, the actress and activist chose to praise others and highlight those who were underrepresented at the award ceremony.

Jane gave mention to films including Nomadland, Ramy, I May Destroy You, and All In.

"You see, stories have a way to...they can change our hearts and our minds. They can help us see each other in a new light. To have empathy. To recognize that, for all our diversity, we are humans first, right? You know, I've seen a lot of diversity in my long life, and at times I've been challenged to understand some of the people I've met. But inevitably, if my heart is open, and I look beneath the surface, I feel kinship," Jane said.

She also called out the lack of diversity represented in the industry and at award ceremonies, asking viewers to consider "who's offered a seat at the table and who is kept out of the rooms where decisions are made."

"So let's all of us — including all the groups that decide who gets hired and what gets made and who wins awards — let's all of us make an effort to expand that tent. So that everyone rises and everyone's story has a chance to be seen and heard. I mean, doing this simply means acknowledging what's true. Being in step with the emerging diversity that's happening because of all those who marched and fought in the past and those who've picked up the baton today," Jane continued.

Obviously, Jane's speech made and impact and people had a lot to say about it:

jane fonda is such a good example of how the excuse of old people being bigots bc "they grew up in a different time" is completely invalid

Jane Fonda is one of the VERY few white ppl who GETS it in every way when it comes to privilege and how to amplify and uplift those who do not have it in whatever ways in which she does. She’s been a TRUE accomplice for decades. https://t.co/tX4eZeoqvz
