Unbroken marks the English-language debut performance of Takamasa Ishihara, better known outside the film industry as Japanese rock star Miyavi. His portrayal of sadistic Imperial Army Sergeant Mutsuhiro Watanabe has an incredible pull that is hard to miss, even in a film full of stellar performances.

So, beyond the fact that he makes a fantastic on-screen villain, what do you need to know about Miyavi?

6. He spent 6 months in America in late 2006.

Everyone needs a good rock origin story, and in 2006, at the height of his Japanese fame he took off for America. He busked on Venice Beach in between taking English lessons and dance classes.

Most recently, he wrote the hit single Top Of The World for Japanese boy band superstars, SMAP.

8. He has a drummer named Bobo. / Via

Leaving aside the fact that Bobo is a great name for a drummer, the pair are super close. "He feels responsible for me. He tweets pics from our gigs on Twitter even faster than me – or my manager for that matter!" Miyavi told MTV81 after their FujiRock performance last year.

9. He's been in a few different bands.
