What’s in a name?

The caves take its name from the Chinese Buddhist monk “Fa Hien”, who sought shelter and used the cave as his residence while on his journey to Adam’s Peak.

The cave is known to reach to a height of 175 feet and measuring 200 feet in length. The cave was first excavated in the late 1960s by the Department of Archaeology.

Human remains

During excavation, bones belonging to two adults, a young child, two older children and a juvenile were discovered. The remains were believed to date back to the latter Pleistocene era.

Cave

The cave measures to 15 feet high and 147 feet wide, and it is assumed that approximately 3000 people can be accommodated in here. Due to the south west monsoon winds hollowing out the rock, the entrance of the cave forms half a circle.
