Specifically, Sean Penn making a green card joke about Birdman director Alejandro González Iñárritu.
Iñárritu, for his part, said Penn's joke was "hilarious," and noted that the two "have that kind of brutal relationship where only true friendship can survive," forged during their work together on 2003's 21 Grams.
Immigration was also a theme of the Mexican director's acceptance speech, during which he called for "dignity and respect" for immigrants and referred to the United States as "an immigration nation."
