17 People Who Walked Into Their Airbnb And Almost Immediately Wanted To Walk Back Out

Their stay was $37 a night for two nights. How did they end up with a $300 bill?

After complaints surrounding Airbnb and their hosts charging egregious extra fees surfaced online, the company announced in November that they would begin making the total rental cost for properties, including fees, clearer to customers as they search for places to stay.

While this has helped with transparency overall, guests are still struggling to rationalize why they'd choose to stay in an Airbnb over a hotel after dealing with high cleaning fees, nightmarish hosts, broken plumbing, weird knickknacks, and more. And they're sharing it online:

    1. For example, one Airbnb guest found a note left by their host, asking that they tip their cleaners in addition to paying a cleaning fee:

    2. Another found a "poo logbook," where over 100 previous guests tracked what they'd done to that toilet:

    3. And another host left their dog behind. He's a cuddler named Kevin:

    4. This guy remembers booking an apartment for his family, including "an infant and elderly in-laws." It could have been a nice stay, but the elevator in the building was broken, and they had to walk up five flights of stairs each way in and out:

@tomgara On my last AirBnB trip, I booked a top floor unit at the beach for the view. Elevator was out the entire week so it became a 5th floor walkup with an infant and elderly in-laws. No offers to refund any of the price. 🙃

    5. This host left a sheet full of kitchen rules.

    6. And this guest's two-night stay at $262 a night quickly jumped from an expected $524 all the way up to $1,211:

    7. Similarly, another guest tried to book a two-night stay at a rate of $37/night, but somehow ended up paying nearly $300 after the cleaning fee added a huge chunk to the total.

    8. This guest tried to take a bath, but the water came out like this:

    9. And this person tried to watch TV, but found themselves craning their neck:

    10. This guest booked their stay after learning the Airbnb had a luxurious hot tub... but found this instead:

    11. This family booked a stay near a hospital where one guest would be having open heart surgery. As you'd expect, they wanted someplace clean to recover. Instead, they were met by this sock that speaks for the cleanliness of the house:

    12. One family found this cursed thing inside their stay:

    13. And another found a creepy door:

    14. This guest discovered mold that appears to be from water damage:

    15. And this host asked guests to tip housecleaners if the home was clean upon their arrival — as if walking into a clean home is an added perk:

    16. This host is looking for someone to stay full time during the week...

...they want a working professional who only needs housing Monday through Friday...

...and is willing to give up housing on the weekend so Airbnb guests can come through.

    17. And finally, this guest found a not-so-ominous pair of handcuffs attached to a leg on the bed in their Airbnb. Totally fine.

Now, I'm curious — do you have any nightmare short-term rental stories? If you feel comfortable sharing, tell me about it in the comments.
