When the reality of living life inside during the pandemic first started, years-old movies about disease outbreaks quickly started trending again. Around this time last year, the 2011 film Contagion reached a new surge in viewership that pushed it into the top 10 most-rented movies in the US.
Now, people are rediscovering the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) blog that shares tips on how to survive a zombie apocalypse — and they're freaking out.
Tips on the site include starting with the essentials: "First of all, you should have an emergency kit in your house. This includes things like water, food, and other supplies to get you through the first couple of days before you can locate a zombie-free refugee camp (or in the event of a natural disaster, it will buy you some time until you are able to make your way to an evacuation shelter or utility lines are restored)."
After your kit is prepared, the CDC recommends sitting down with your family and coming up with an agreed upon plan that includes designating a meeting place, learning essential emergency contact numbers, and planning an evacuation route.
And most importantly, they remind citizens to have no fear because they're ready to help! In the wake of a zombie apocalypse, the CDC promises to provide technical assistance throughout the US and abroad.
Who knew so much would go into zombie preparedness?
While it's fun to imagine that a government entity is taking zombie preparedness seriously, the CDC's blog dates back to 2011 — one year after The Walking Dead first aired — and cites pop culture's interest in zombies as their inspiration.
"Wonder why zombies, zombie apocalypse, and zombie preparedness continue to live or walk dead on a CDC website? As it turns out, what first began as a tongue-in-cheek campaign to engage new audiences with preparedness messages has proven to be a very effective platform. We continue to reach and engage a wide variety of audiences on all hazards preparedness via 'zombie preparedness.'"
