Don’t we all wish hip hop would go through a vegetarian phase and quit all of the beef? Yes all pun intended! In an era where people are consuming music and fast food at such rapid rates, it’s important to slow down and reconsider the long term effects that unhealthy foods have on our bodies. Nowadays more people are sharing healthy lifestyle tips to educate their communities on becoming more health conscious. From beats to beets these hip hop entrepreneurs and influencers have chosen to utilize their platforms to highlight and showcase their vegetarian and vegan lifestyles. Broccoli City Festival is a great example of a music + food festival, offering several vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options to draw attention for Earth Day. The Queen of Soul vegan Erykah Badu headlined Broccoli City Festival in 2015.

1. Russell Simmons

Russell Simmons vegan journey began with his yoga practice, the practice of non-harming, ‘ahimsa’. He primarily became vegan because of his compassion for animals. Simmons wrote his book “Happy Vegan” to educate people on the many benefits of converting to a vegan lifestyle. Some of the advantages of a vegan diet is that it’s low in saturated fat and it’s high in fiber.

2. Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu doesn’t like to label herself as vegan because she doesn’t like to subscribe to any organizations, but she has been eating like a vegan since 1997. In 2016, Badu hosted a vegan soul food hearty dinner celebration, which included glazed carrots, braised mustard greens, barbecue tempeh and purple potato soup.

3. RZA

Hip Hop mogul and author RZA explained his vegan lifestyle in his book “The Tao of Wu.” In 1995 he banned fish and chicken from his plate. He said he felt like an idiot – and he would surely be able to come up with ideas of what to eat instead of dead meat? RZA thought to himself ‘I live, my flesh lives. Why would I want to eat something that’s dead?’ Starting from this day, I ate to live.”

4. Waka Flocka

ATL rapper Waka Flocka announced that he was vegan and showed off of his weight loss via Instagram. Shortly after Flocka teamed up with fellow Vegan Rapper Raury for their cooking show called Munchies. On their first episode they made vegan blueberry muffins while discussed their diet and lifestyle changes.

5. YG

YG went on the Breakfast Club and denounced processed food stating that the stuff manufacturers put in food is what’s causing cancer. After conducting food research, YG decided to make Vegan Transition.

6. Jermaine Dupri

Jermaine Dupri advises people looking to convert to a vegan lifestyle to consult a doctor and/or nutritionist to be very gradual and careful with major diet changes. Dupri began by cutting off pork, then beef, then he eventually only ate some fish and turkey. Afterwards he tried vegetarianism then finally became vegan because he could no longer deal with cows.

7. Travis Barker

Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker was a vegetarian for over 25 years but after a tragic plane crash and had a health scare where he had eight ulcers in his stomach he decided to become vegan. Barker admits that he sometimes slips up while on the road and has egg whites, calling them a good protein boost. “If I can feel my body starting to tire those are good to keep you healthy.” Barker opened his Crossroads vegan restaurant in Los Angeles where they serve an amazing Chicken’ and Waffles Dish.

8. Taz

Hip Hop artist & Broccoli City Festival coordinator Taz, has consulted with Broccoli City Fest Founder Brandon McErheran on strategic ways to educate & influence millennials on culture shifting moves and effective ways of incorporating a vegetarian and vegan diet into a hip hop lifestyle.
