I Used To Work In The Fashion Industry, So Here Are 9 Trends You Should Consider Adding To Your Closet, And 9 That You Should Stay Far, Far Away From

I'm sorry, but the world only needs so many Y2K-revival outfits.

They always say what goes around comes back around again, especially with fashion trends, which typically cycle back every 20 years (think, we're in the early 2000s revival right now!). Still, some trends can last well past their peak, and others, well, should stay put right where they are.

Now, I'm a huge supporter of wearing whatever the heck you want! There are no hard and fast rules to fashion, but as a former fashion buyer, I'd say there are certainly ~guidelines~ you can follow if you want your clothes to last longer. So, without further ado, let's take a look at what 2023 trends will hold up past their current season, and which ones you'll want to avoid.

    JUST A TREND: Cargo pants

    TIMELESS: Cotton Jeans

Princess Diana wearing jeans tucked into riding boots, and an oversized blazer

    JUST A TREND: Barbiecore

    TIMELESS: Colorblocking

    JUST A TREND: Cutouts

A top that cuts out at the nexk/shoulder and ribcage

    TIMELESS: Draped dressing

    JUST A TREND: Satin

Aylin Koenig wearing The Frankie Shop blazer, Chanel shoes, Prada bag, satin Arket dress, Celine Sunglasses

    TIMELESS: Silk dressing

    JUST A TREND: Wide Pants

Kim Kardashian wearing baggy jeans in a parking lot

    TIMELESS: Trousers

Emma Chamberlain walks in trousers with a coffee

    JUST A TREND: Chunky sneakers

    TIMELESS: White sneakers

But these nearly $600 sneakers?... JUST A TREND

    ALSO TIMELESS: Button-up shirts

    JUST A TREND: Low-rise

    TIMELESS: Denim dressing

Dakota Johnson wearing denim tench, bustier, and jeans

    JUST A TREND: "Y2K" Revival

    TIMELESS: Western

That's everything I got! Of course, you should wear whatever makes you feel good, and if you wanna wear a trend forever and ever, do it! But I find if I keep 70–80% of my wardrobe in the "timeless" category, and 20–30% in "trend," my pockets thank me and I'm a lot less frustrated when things inevitably go out of style.

What else do you think is just a trend? What's in your closet that you keep re-wearing? Let me know in the comments below!
