**Ballot measure: Anti-abortion**  
An anti-abortion amendment on the ballots are stirring up controversy in this traditionally red state. Amendment 2 would add the promise that Alabama "does not protect the right to abortion or require the funding of abortion" to the state constitution. With a possible end to Roe. vs. Wade in sight, this amendment’s language has [some politicians and advocacy groups](https://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/story/news/politics/2018/10/25/anti-abortion-amendment-alabama-election-ballot-amendment-2-meaning/1448690002/) worried.

**Governor: Mike Dunleavy (R) vs. Mark Begich (D)**
 Current Alaskan governor, Independent Bill Walker, [dropped out of the race](http://www.wbur.org/hereandnow/2018/10/31/alaska-governors-race) two weeks before Election Day, and endorsed Democrat Mark Begich, leaving Republican candidate Mike Dunleavy scrambling in what was once considered an easy race for him.

Arizona hasn't elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1988, but Democrat Kyrsten Sinema is [holding her own](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/senate/arizona/) against Republican representative Martha McSally.

**Governor: Asa Hutchinson (R) vs. Jared Henderson (D)**  

First term governor Asa Hutchinson is seeking reelection in a state that's only had [four](https://www.kark.com/news/politics/in-depth-inside-the-race-for-arkansas-governor/1498931221) Republican governors since Reconstruction. His challenger, Jared Henderson, is a newcomer to politics, but has worked at NASA and Teach For America.

**Ballot measure: Fuel tax repeal**
Prop. 6 has become a [controversial measure](https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/10/28/feud-erupts-over-language-of-california-gas-tax-measure-4) on the ballot due to its framing. Currently it is explained as an action that, "Eliminates certain road repair and transportation funding." Republicans say this language doesn't accurately reflect the proposition's purpose to voters.

California

**Governor: Jared Polis (D) vs. Walker Stapleton (R)**  
Jared Polis, a Democratic politician, maintains a steady lead over his Republican challenger, Walker Stapleton, but Republicans believe that after a decade of Democratic leadership, Colorado might be [ready](https://www.denverpost.com/2018/11/01/colorado-governor-poll-polis-stapleton/) to turn their way.

**Governor: Ned Lamont (D) vs. Bob Stefanowski (R)**  

While Connecticut is typically a blue state, residents have been displeased with current governor, Democrat Dan Molloy's performance. With a tough [financial](https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/414527-poll-gops-stefanowski-leads-dem-lamont-by-2-points-in-connecticut-governor) burden to bare voters may turn to Republican businessman Bob Stefanowski for leadership over Democratic politician Ned Lamont.

**State Senate: Greg Lavelle (R) vs. Laura Sturgeon (D)**  

Democrats have maintained a razor-thin hold of Delaware’s Senate and are hoping that this year’s blue wave will unseat some Republicans, like [incumbent Greg Lavelle](http://www.delawarepublic.org/post/races-watch-4th-state-senate-district), in favor of political newcomer Laura Sturgeon, an educator.

**Governor: Ron DeSantis (R) vs. Andrew Gillum (D)**  

President Trump endorsed Ron DeSantis, a Freedom Caucus member and frequent guest on Fox News. Andrew Gillum, currently the Mayor of Tallahassee has emerged as a [major contender](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/florida/), energizing voters and drawing support from figures like Bernie Sanders and George Soros.

**Governor: Brian Kemp (R) vs. Stacey Abrams (D)**
The race remains [remarkably tight](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/georgia/) between Secretary of State Brian Kemp and former state House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams. While Georgia is a red state, President Trump lead by a thin margin in the 2016 election and Democrats believe the state is trending their way. In Georgia, if neither Abrams nor Kemp can reach 50% on Election Day, there will be a runoff election in December.

**Governor: David Ige (D) vs. Andria Tupola (R)**  

Republican challenger Andria Tupola has the chance to make history as Hawaii’s [first woman governor](http://www.governing.com/topics/politics/tns-tupola-hawaii-gop-governor-race-trump.html), but the Republican party isn’t popular on the islands. Incumbent governor David Ige has tried to make Donald Trump an issue in the election, and it seems to be working. **Governor: Bruce Rauner (R) vs. J.B. Pritzker (D)**  

Republican incumbent Bruce Rauner has had a [hard time](https://theweek.com/articles/804523/illinois-governor-race-could-most-pivotal-2018-midterms) governing this traditionally blue state, alienating hardline Republicans as well as Illinois Democrats. His Democratic challenger, billionaire J.B. Pritzker, looks like he might pick up this win.

**Senate: Joe Donnelly (D) vs. Mike Braun (R)**  

Democrat Sen. Joe Donnelly is seeking reelection in a state Donald Trump won by a big margin. Republican challenger Mike Braun, who previously served as state representative for Indiana's 63rd district, is [barely](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/senate/indiana/) trailing behind.

**Governor: Kim Reynolds (R) vs. Fred Hubbell (D)**  

Current Governor Kim Reynolds inherited her role from Terry Branstad after he became U.S. Ambassador to China, so this election will reflect how good a job her constituents feel she's done. Democratic challenger Fred Hubbell, a former Equitable Life CEO, has kept the race tight and is currently leading by [two points](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/iowa/).

**Governor: Kris Kobach (R) vs. Laura Kelly (D)**  

Republican Kris Kobach has the President's support, but that may not hold sway for Republicans in Kansas, where Donald Trump's approval rating [has dropped](https://www.kmbc.com/article/poll-shows-pres-trumps-latest-approval-rating-in-kansas-missouri/23307060). Currently Democratic challenger Laura Kelly is [tied](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/kansas/) with Kobach in polls.

**Secretary of State: Kyle Ardoin (R), Heather Cloud (R), A.G. Crowe (R), Rick Edmonds (R), Julie Stokes (R), Gwen Collins-Greenup (D), Renee Fontenot Free (D)**  

Former Secretary of State Tom Schedler resigned from office after [sexual harassment allegations](https://www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/news/politics/elections/article_67d04b82-dec2-11e8-8507-b3ad39a51ffb.html), and there are a number of candidates on the ballot. If no one ends up with a majority of votes, this election will have to be decided in a runoff on December 9th.

Louisiana

**Governor: Shawn Moody (R) vs. Janet Mills (D)**  

Maine has had a Republican governor for the past seven years and Republican Shawn Moody hopes to continue that trend, but former Attorney General Janet Mills, his Democratic challenger, has [been leading](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/maine/) in the polls.

**Ballot Measure: Question 2**
Delegate Kirill Reznik has sponsored legislation that would amend the state constitution to allow voters to register to vote on Election Day, a move he says will increase voter turnout. Opponents claim this may lead to fraud, though studies show that the threat can be [over-exaggerated](https://www.brennancenter.org/publication/truth-about-voter-fraud)

Maryland

**Governor: Charlie Baker (R) vs. Jay Gonzalez (D)**  

While Democrats outnumber Republicans in Massachusetts, unenrolled voters (who aren’t affiliated with either party) make up the majority of voters. Most seem [content](https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2018/11/04/massachusetts-island-voters-debate-role-trump-race-for-governor/bTCk5FIBaS5MhMesueHREK/story.html) with Charlie Baker, a moderate Republican who has been credited with major improvements to infrastructure and spending. Though Jay Gonzalez is the more progressive candidate, the so-called blue wave may not make it to the Massachusetts governorship.

**Representative, Michigan's 8th District: Rep. Mike Bishop (R) vs. Elissa Slotkin (D)**  

Republican incumbent Mike Bishop is seeking his third term in this Republican-leaning district. His challenger, Elissa Slotkin, is a political newcomer, but got her start in foreign intelligence with the CIA and has worked in national security under the Bush and Obama administrations. The two are currently polling within [one point](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/house/michigan/) of each other.

**Representative, Minnesota's 8th District: Joe Radinovich (D) vs. Pete Stauber (R)**  

With Democrat Rick Nolan retiring, and his one time campaign manager and former House representative Joe Radinovich, is hoping to fill his shoes. But the once solidly Democratic eighth district swung from Barack Obama to Donald Trump in the 2016 election. Republican challenger Pete Stauber, a former police lieutenant and professional hockey player who also served as a member of the St. Louis County Commission, is in the [lead](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/house/minnesota/).

Minnesota

**Senate: Mike Espy (D), Tobey Bernard Bartee (D), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R), Chris McDaniel (R)**  

This year, Mississippi must vote for not one, but two senators. This four-way special election to fill the last two years of Senator Thad Cochran’s seat may prove an [especially contentious](https://wreg.com/2018/11/04/2-senate-races-headline-mississippis-tuesday-ballot/) race. Mike Espy, the first black politician from Mississippi to serve in Congress since Reconstruction, is hoping to pull a upset in the closely divided Senate, but he has a long way to go.

**Senator: Claire McCaskill (D) vs. Josh Hawley (R)**  

Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill has been effectively [tied](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/senate/missouri/) with her Republican challenger, Josh Hawley, for the majority of the race in this historically red state.

Missouri

**Senate: Jon Tester (D) vs. Matt Rosendale (R)**  
 Though Donald Trump took Montana in the 2016 presidential election, Democrat Jon Tester has maintained a shaky lead over Republican challenger and state auditor, Matt Rosendale. Rosendale has the support of both President Trump and his son, Donald Trump, Jr., leaving Republicans hopeful they'll be able to pick up this Senate seat.

**Representative, Nebraska’s 2nd District: Don Bacon (R) vs. Kara Eastman (D)**  

Democratic challenger Kara Eastman is a strange one for incumbent Don Bacon to be going up against. This red district has usually moved towards the [center](https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/11/03/kara-eastman-nebraska-democrats-2018-elections-222185), sometimes favoring moderate Democrats, but Eastman is running on an unapologetically progressive platform, and it earned her a spot on the Democratic ticket. It remains to be seen if her campaign strategy will prove too bold for the district.

**Senator: Dean Heller (R) vs. Jacky Rosen (D)**  
 Republican senator Dean Heller is seeking another term in this state, which seems to be leaning blue. Democrats are hoping Democratic challenger and former Representative Jacky Rosen can pick this seat up. The race remains [close](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/senate/nevada/).

Nevada

**Governor: Chris Sonunu (R) vs. Molly Kelly (D)**  

This governor race has recently gotten competitive, with polls showing that incumbent Gov. Chris Sonunu has lost [his edge](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/new-hampshire/) against challenger Molly Kelly, a former state senator who is campaigning primarily on paid family leave.

New Hampshire

**Senator: Robert Menendez (D) vs. Bob Hugin (R)**  

Democratic incumbent Robert Menendez has served as New Jersey senator since 2006, but a recent corruption trial has dogged his campaign for re-election. Despite this, his Republican challenger, pharmaceutical executive Bob Hugin, has consistently [trailed](https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2018/senate/nj/new_jersey_senate_hugin_vs_menendez-6506.html) behind in the polls.

New Jersey

**Representative, New Mexico's 2nd District: Yvette Herrell (R) vs. Xochitl Torres Small (D)**  

District two is New Mexico's only red-leaning district. With Steve Pearce stepping down, Yvette Herrell, a state representative and strong Trump supporter, is the Republican nominee. Her challenger, Xochitl Torres Small, is a water rights lawyer and former Senate aide. The two are virtually [tied](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/house/new-mexico/2/) as of latest polling.

New Mexico

**Representative, New York's 19th District: Rep. John Faso (R) vs. Antonio Delgado (D)**  

First-term representative John Faso, is locked in a [tight](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/house/new-york/19/) race with his Democratic challenger Antonio Delgado, a former attorney and Rhodes Scholar. Barack Obama won the district by a narrow margin in 2008 and 2012, as did President Trump in the 2016 election, so Democrats are hoping a victory here will be seen as part of their blue wave.

New York

**Representative, North Carolina's 9th District: Mark Harris (R) vs. Dan McCready (D)**  

Republican newcomer Mark Harris, a Baptist minister, defeated incumbent Robert Pittenger in the primary, making this a race to watch. Democratic challenger Dan McCready, a former Marine, is also new to politics. He's billing himself as a [moderate](https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/politics-government/election/article219662385.html), while Harris is known for his deeply conservative stances on cultural issues like women in the workplace and gay marriage.

North Carolina

**Senator: Heidi Heitkamp (D) vs. Kevin Cramer (R)**  

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is a Democratic incumbent facing reelection in a red state, and she recently voted against confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. She's currently [trailing](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/senate/north-dakota/) in the polls against her Republican challenger, Kevin Cramer.

North Dakota

**Governor: Mark DeWine (R) vs. Richard Cordray (D)**  

Republican nominee Mike DeWine is Ohio's attorney general and is hoping to pick up John Kasich's vacated seat. Democratic challenger Richard Cordray has served in a number of government positions, including in the Ohio House of Representatives and as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Both have emphasized opioids and jobs in their campaign, but Cordray has maintained a [slight](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/ohio/) lead over DeWine.

**Governor: Kevin Stitt (R) vs. Drew Edmondson (D)**  

Oklahoma has had a Republican governor for the last eight years, and former polls have shown Republican newcomer Kevin Sitt in the lead. He has the support of President Trump and Vice President Pence. However, recent polling shows that his Democratic challenger, former Oklahoma attorney general Drew Edmondson, has gained [momentum](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/oklahoma/), especially among young voters.

Oklahoma

**Governor: Kate Brown (D) vs. Knute Buehler (R)**  
Governor Kate Brown is having a hard time seeking reelection in this traditionally blue state. She leads by just [a few](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/oregon/) points and is up against Knute Buehler, a fairly moderate Republican.

Oregon

**Representative, Pennsylvania’s 1st District: Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R) vs. Scott Wallace (D)**  

First-term incumbent Brian Fitzpatrick has the [name recognition](https://whyy.org/articles/fitzpatrick-says-character-and-experience-will-win-him-8th-district-seat-not-family-name/) to propel him forward, but Pennsylvania's congressional map was recently redrawn in February. The first district is now blue-leaning and Democratic challenger Scott Wallace, a wealthy philanthropist, is arguing that Fitzpatrick hasn't done enough to distance himself from President Trump.

**Governor: Gina Raimondo (D) vs. Allan Fung (R) vs. Joe Trillo (I)**  

Though incumbent Gina Raimondo is seeking reelection in a blue state, she’s not especially [popular](https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2018/10/23/unpredictable-governor-race-dubbed-full-rhode-island/Xx7k6Fvv6FsJcvqbokkFhJ/story.html). This should have translated into an easy win for Republican challenger Allan Fung, mayor of Cranston. But challengers including Independent Joe Trillo (whose temper has caused a scandal during the race), Independent Dr. Luis-Daniel Munoz, Moderate Party Candidate William Gilbert, and Compassion Party Candidate Anne Armstrong have made this a more competitive race than expected.

Rhode Island

**Governor: Henry McMaster (R) vs. James Smith (D)**  

While Henry McMaster, who inherited his seat from former Ambassador Nikki Haley, is the frontrunner in this race, he’s not beloved by [all Republicans](https://www.postandcourier.com/politics/sc-governor-race-guide-their-backgrounds-stances-chances-of-winning/article_cf54994e-da02-11e8-b9ed-e7d101c9250c.html). Democrat James Smith, a former veteran who has served in the House of Representatives, styles himself as a uniting force, but will need to win over South Carolina’s black voting population, along with moderates and Republicans unhappy with McMaster.

South Carolina

**Governor: Kristi Noem (R) vs. Billie Sutton (D)**  

South Dakota hasn’t had a Democratic governor in 40 years, but Billie Sutton has shocked pollsters by running a close race, with some polls show him in the lead. Noem, who has been South Dakota’s Representative since 2011 doesn’t trail [far behind](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/governor/south-dakota/).

South Dakota

**Governor: Marsha Blackburn (R) vs. Phil Bredesen (D)**  

Republican Sen. Bob Corker is retiring from this state Trump won in a landslide, and Republicans are hoping to keep the seat. However, polls put Democrat Phil Bredesen, a two-term ex-governor with high name recognition, in a [tight race](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/senate/tennessee/) with Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn.

Tennessee

**Senate: Ted Cruz (R) vs. Beto O'Rourke (D)**  

Texas hasn't elected a Democrat to statewide office since [1994](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-10-02/cruz-forced-into-toss-up-by-el-paso-liberal-in-deep-red-texas), and Republican Sen. Ted Cruz began the race expected to win a second term. However, Rep. Beto O'Rourke's campaign has gained enough attention that he's now [tied](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/senate/texas/) with Cruz, according to latest data.

**Representative, Utah’s 4th District: Rep. Mia Love (R) vs. Ben McAdams (D)**  

Incumbent Mia Love, the only Republican on the Congressional Black Caucus, is seeking re-election in Utah's fourth district, where President Donald Trump is viewed slightly [unfavorably](https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2018/10/03/utahs-highly-watched-mia/). This bodes well for Democratic challenger Ben McAdams, mayor of Salt Lake County, who has billed himself as an independent thinker and bipartisan legislator.

**Governor: Phil Scott (R) vs. Christine Hallquist (D)**  

Christine Hallquist is the [first](https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/transgender-gubernatorial-candidate-christine-hallquist-trump-eradicate-community/story?id=58903238) openly transgender gubernatorial nominee for the Democratic party (or indeed any major political party) in the US. She is challenging incumbent governor Phil Scott, a moderate Republican who won his election by over [eight](https://www.politico.com/2016-election/results/map/governor/vermont/) points. Despite Vermont being a deeply blue state, Hallquist is seen as the underdog in this race.

**Representative, Virginia’s 2nd District: Rep. Scott Taylor (R) vs. Elaine Luria (D)**  

Republican Scott Taylor's campaign has been marred by [scandal](https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/08/07/virginia-gop-congressman-staff-investigated-for-election-fraud/) after allegations surfaced that his staffers helped get an independent nominee on the ballot to siphon votes from Democratic challenger Elaine Luria. Luria is a Navy veteran and political newcomer. The two are currently [tied](https://healthcarevoter.org/new-house-polls-voters-cite-health-care-top-issue-ahead-midterm-elections/).

Virginia

**Representative, Washington’s 8th District: Dino Rossi (R) vs. Dr. Kim Schrier (D)**  

Since its creation in 1983, Washington's eighth district has only sent Republicans to the House. Democratic challenger Dr. Kim Schrier, a pediatrician, looks like she might [upend](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/house/washington/8/) that trend in polls against Republican nominee Dino Rossi, a well-known businessman who participated in the Washington Senate.

**Senator: Joe Manchin (D) vs. Patrick Morrisey (R)**  

Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin is an unusual case. He's a Democrat in a red state who appears to be doing well, even with Trump campaigning for his opponent, Republican state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey.

West Virginia

**Governor: Scott Walker (R) vs. Tony Evers (D)**  

Wisconsin's superintendent of public instruction is challenging incumbent Scott Walker for governorship. Walker's approval rating has dipped [below](https://law.marquette.edu/poll/) 50% and Evers is emphasizing issues Walker and Wisconsinites disagree on including healthcare and education.

**Governor: Mark Gordon (R) vs. Mary Throne (D)**  

Wyoming’s governor race has been one of the most [expensive](https://trib.com/news/state-and-regional/govt-and-politics/wyoming-s-governor-race-is-already-the-most-expensive-on/article_634f4737-c96d-5c0d-bdcf-2a21e683660c.html) in the nation. Republican treasurer, Mark Gordon, may inherit a weakened state economy from his party’s predecessor, Matt Mead. Democratic challenger Mary Throne is also concerned about the economy, but favors diversified revenue streams, like marijuana legalization.

Wyoming

**Governor: Brad Little (R) vs. Paulette Jordan (D)**  

Paulette Jordan has the opportunity to become the Idaho’s [first Indigenous woman](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2018/11/212929/paulette-jordan-idaho-governor-race-democrat-platform-election-2018) governor. While not the typical Democrat (she is a defender of the second amendment and believes in small local government), Republican lieutenant governor has the name recognition to push him to the governorship.

**Representative, Kentucky’s 6th District: Rep. Andy Barr (R) vs. Amy McGrath (D)**  

Republican incumbent Andy Barr is in a close race with Democratic first-timer Amy McGrath, whose stirring ad pulled in millions of dollars in campaign donations. Pundits view the race in this red state as indicative of just [how strong](https://mic.com/articles/192012/a-blue-wave-or-a-ripple-how-to-watch-midterm-results-as-they-come-in#.AD1QkquEk) the “blue wave” Democrats have promised will be.
