Studies have found that Americans toss over 200 million tons of trash out in a year. We've gotten better about recycling and composting, but a bunch of useful material still gets sent to landfills.

Landfills are locked tight to keep pollutants from entering the environment, which is cool, but also means that all our stuff decomposes at much slower rates, and releases a bunch more methane gas than usual.
