You Can Only Have Sex If You Pass This Sex Quiz

), HSV-1, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and genital warts can be spread during oral, anal, and vaginal sex, and also by sharing sex toys. Syphilis can be spread by these means when someone has a sore, and HSV-2 can be spread through skin-to-skin contact when someone has lesions.

According to the [NHS](http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/LGBhealth/Pages/lesbianhealth.aspx
): "Women can catch STIs such as herpes, genital warts, and chlamydia when exchanging bodily fluids. Any one-on-one contact, such as oral sex or using the same hand when touching yourself and then your partner, can put you at risk." You can also catch [trichomoniasis](http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Trichomonas_vaginalis/Pages/Introduction.aspx) through sharing sex toys.

Some people don’t have symptoms, or don’t [notice](http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/STIs/Pages/STIs.aspx)
any symptoms.

If you're in the UK, according to the [NHS](http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/STIs/Pages/VisitinganSTIclinic.aspx): “If you're under 16, the service is still confidential and the clinic won't tell your parents.” Additionally, your GP won’t be told about your visit, and you don’t have to give your real name if you don’t want to.

According to the [NHS](http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/STIs/Pages/ExpertAnswers.aspx), “There are no STIs that are only caught by men or only caught by women. If you think that you may be at risk of an STI, the only way to find out is by having an STI check-up."

You can take the morning-after pill up to three or five days after having unprotected sex, depending on which type of pill it is.   

Levonelle can be taken up to 72 hours (3 days) after sex. EllaOne can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after sex. You can get both over the counter in pharmacies in the UK.  

But you should remember that the longer you leave it, the [less effective the pill will be](  
http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/contraception-guide/pages/emergency-contraception.aspx).  

Instead of taking a pill, you can also get an IUD implanted up to 5 days after unprotected sex to try to prevent a pregnancy.

You can get pregnant again as soon as three weeks after giving birth, even if your periods haven’t started again, and even if you’re breastfeeding. That’s because you ovulate up two weeks before your period starts – so you may not be aware that you have ovulated, and could be in your fertile window.  
Many women do use something called the lactational amenorrhoea method to help prevent pregnancy while breastfeeding, but to be effective you must be exclusively breastfeeding (i.e. not giving your baby other foods or formula, as that could reduce the amount you lactate) and your baby must be less than six months old. Even then, 1 in 200 people who use this method will get pregnant in the first six months, [according to the NHS](http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/contraception-guide/pages/natural-family-planning.aspx#Lactational%0A).

Studies show that sperm [can survive](http://humupd.oxfordjournals.org/content/12/1/23.full) for up to [five days](http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199512073332301), and [the NHS says](http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Fertility/Pages/Fertilitythefacts.aspx) it might even be able to live for seven days. That’s why the fertile window is longer than the day or so during which the egg is floating around in the uterus – because sperm that got up there several days earlier could still be alive and ready to fertilise that egg.

If you're in the UK, according [to the NHS](http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Sexandyoungpeople/Pages/Willtheytellmyparents.aspx), when you’re aged 13 to 16 you have the same rights to confidentiality as an adult. As long as your doctor believes you fully understand the information they’ve given you and the decisions you’re making, they won’t tell your parents.

All that needs to happen for someone to get pregnant is for a sperm to meet an egg. That can happen if you [have sex standing up](http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Sexandyoungpeople/Pages/Sexmythsbusted.aspx), in the shower, or on the moon (probably).

Dating someone or having previously had sex with them does not mean they automatically consent to have sex with you again. Neither does them remaining silent, or being interested in other sexual acts. Consent should be given willingly by someone who has the capacity to make that choice, and it should [never be coerced or assumed](https://www.brook.org.uk/your-life/consent).
