What we say and what we mean: two VASTLY different things.
This is at the top of the list (meaning it's the worst text/chat response) because it's outwardly passive-aggressive. If the person you're talking to types "...ok," you know you're in for some serious angry paragraphs later on.
The "k" is notorious for being an utterly garbage response in any chat conversation. A better option than typing "k" would probably be no response at all; just leave the conversation hanging forever and ever!
A tremendously horrible, extremely patronizing response. To respond with "nice" is to diminish whatever the other person said by about a thousand percent. Add an "Ohh" to it and you've got the perfect storm. You went to the zoo today? Ohh, nice!
No laughing out loud happening here, or laughing of any kind. Maybe they found what you said entertaining, or they're simply acknowledging it, or they want to let you know that they're slightly annoyed with it. So many possibilities!
Very similar to "lol." Something might be a bit amusing, but they definitely didn't react to it IRL in any way.
This definitely doesn't indicate real laughter, and maybe not even a real smile. It's more like, "OK, yes, I see your point."
Now we're talkin.' If you receive a "hahaha," you know they're cracking a smile. Very impressive!
A real-genuine smile has now spread across your conversation partner's face. They appreciate the things you're saying. You're really doing it!
The "LOL" is so satisfying. It's such a compact little message, yet it's so full of appreciation. They still may or may not be actually laughing out loud, but it doesn't matter; the "LOL" is beautiful and pure and perfect just the way it is.
You caught 'em off guard with a funny joke, and they're loving it.
If someone says "LMAO," they probably are laughing. Whoa, rare.
The best reaction of them all: "LMFAO" is reserved for when something is actually really funny. You know you've scored some serious points with someone when you get a "LMFAO."
