FLASHBACK FRIDAY: GROWING UP SOUTHERN...NORTH CAROLINA SPECIFICALLY

The South gets a bad wrap sometimes, but living in NYC has taught me that The South is pretty awesome in ways only us true Southerners will understand.

Folks have unsolicited manners, strangers speak without motive. Everybody knows at least one person in your family and if they're unsure they'll ask you "Who you kin to?!l" or "Who's your people".

Church on Sunday is second nature as is Sunday dinner and football. You either root for THE Carolina or Duke, never both. You know that SC is NOTHING like NC and it annoys you when people group them together. I personally find it insulting.

Cheerwine is the state beverage 2nd only to Sweet Tea. Regular folks shop at Food Lion, uppity folks shop at Harris Teeter. We eat slaw and Chili on our 4th of July hotdogs, fry livermush on Saturday mornings and buy fresh pork rinds at the TradeLot. We eat Krispy Kreme because we know that's the only real doughnut. Country Crock butter and homemade ranch dressing go with everything.

We love God and know how to shoot a shot gun in case folks want to act up. You haven't lived until you've rode in the bed of a pick up truck or walked barefoot down an old dirt road. Any adult over 40 had clearance to "hem you up" if you were acting out in public and everybody is greeted with "Ma'am" or "Sir' regardless of age.

What do you love about growing up southern?!
