Twenty years after the death of iconic Mexican-American singer Selena, the city of Corpus Christi and her family are commemorating her life with a two-day festival in April.
The "Fiesta de la Flor," a play on her hit song "Como La Flor," will be held on April 17 and April 18 in Corpus Christi, Texas. The event will feature several musicians that include her family and an outdoor screening of Selena, the popular biopic featuring Jennifer Lopez and Edward James Olmos. Her birthday was April 16.
The city expects to attract 50,000 people and estimates it will bring in $1 million, according to a report filed to the city council.
"She's known globally," Stacie Talbert, acting director of the city's parks and recreation department, told the Corpus Christi City Council. "This is going to be a wonderful and successful event."
Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was killed by Yolanda Saldívar at a motel in Corpus Christi on March 31, 1995. "The Queen of Tejano music" had charged Saldívar, who was the president of her fan club, with embezzling money.
On Wednesday city officials approved a lease agreement with the Corpus Christi Convention & Visitors Bureau to use Bayfront Park for the festival. The tourism group and Selena's family organized the commemoration.
Selena's brother, A.B. Quintanilla, posted the news on his Facebook page to more than half a million fans.
"It's official April 17th and 18th C.C.TX!!! Music, food, fun!!! Fiesta de la Flor!!! Every year!!!" he wrote.
