1. Be loud about what makes you different!
Amy Astley, #GirlBoss at Teen Vogue said that as an employer, she want's to be surrounded by people who are smarter than she is and that have great ideas! People with exciting ideas and an original point of view are hugely valued. Being vocal about your own opinions and ideas is what will set you apart.
2. Define success for yourself.
Only subscribe to your own M.O. and decide what success means to you. Success can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. What will make YOU feel successful? Work toward that. Christin, founder of CHRISU, said it best when she explained that success isn't really an end goal. It's a journey and a process. Your definition of success may change, or working toward something may be what feels successful to you!
Although the idea can seem a "super gross" according to Sophia, connections matter. She says that you should never hesitate to ask people for advice because most people are happy to give it and in all honesty, it's flattering to the person you're asking. Most importantly, don't always look to the top of the ladder to network. Make strong connections in your peer group. Amy says that when she's looking to hire, she asks young people if they know anyone. Your peers are who can get you hired!
4. Professionalize what YOU enjoy doing.
Play to your strengths. You can find a career doing something that you love to do, or you can create that career yourself! If you're not a great writer, you probably shouldn't be a fashion blogger. But if you have an eye for great street style, maybe you would love being a stylist! Market yourself as someone who is great at doing what YOU love to do and what YOU'RE great at!
5. Be who you can afford to be.
"Things that you have should a product of what you've done," Sophia says. It's foolish to spend outside your means and it can get you into trouble. When you overspend, it ends up being a lifestyle that you have to spend more to keep up with. Work hard for what you want and it makes it that much more special when you can finally afford that new bag or a cool vacation. Plus, according to Sophia, if someone is a jerk to you for not having expensive things, its a great sign that they don't belong in your life.
6. Get things done!
Sophia said her most valued employees are those who can follow through with tasks and complete assignments! If you need something from someone to complete a project, ALWAYS follow through and never drop the ball if they aren't available. Take all necessary measures to get things done!
7. Sometimes you have to go backward to go forward.
When asked what her advice to someone was who wanted to start a business in a city with high rent, Sophia said, "Move out of the city." Sometimes moves that may feel like backtracking are the things you have to do to get what you want. If rent is too high, go someplace that you can afford to work. If you don't have time to pursue your dreams, free up your schedule. Success can take sacrifices.
8. Forget about FOMO.
Sophia says, "Time is better spent looking at your own life." People are always going to present the best version of their life (great vacations, parties, great clothes, etc.) but you'll never really see the hard work behind the scenes. Everyone who is successful works hard, and "only freaks don't have self-doubt." Focus on yourself and your work, and your future!
9. WORK HARD.
This is the most important step in being a #GirlBoss. Be ambitious, self-motivated and work your ass off to be who you want to be! Get what you want from working hard and you will value what you earn so much more. Everything is better when you work for it, and that's not just a myth your parents made up to get you to do your chores. A true #GirlBoss is someone who is an unstoppable force and gets to where they want to be by putting everything into their work.
