    2. Chernobyl 01:23:40 if you recently watched the HBO series and now need to know more about the incredible true story of one of the most infamous disasters.

Promising review: "I have read many books about Chernobyl, from dry scientific texts to often silly fictional accounts of its aftermath, yet this young author has done the best job of all of them, offering a simple-yet-accurate description of how Chernobyl's RBMK reactors worked and, ultimately, how one of them critically failed. But there is much more here than a factual account of what happened 30 years ago at the V. I. Lenin power plant. Mr. Leatherbarrow shares his deepest feelings about what he encounters on his all-too-short journey to Pripyat and the plant itself. His descriptions are excellent and without pretense, and, above all, his narrative never gets bogged down. His unpretentious and even-handed treatment of the main players in this oft told story is very refreshing. And I was deeply moved by his emotional responses to what he saw and experienced; I think that I too would have wept as I left this compelling place behind. In the final analysis, Andrew put together a superbly told story that turned out to be of sufficient length to ensure that the reader 'got it' without going on and on with repetitious and unnecessary details. Simply put, it was an excellent read, and I found it hard to believe that this was his first book. I certainly hope it won't be his last." —D.E.D.

    3. The Super Easy Vegan Slow Cooker Cookbook: 100 Easy, Healthy Recipes, for people who want to save money, time, animal products, or any combination thereof.

Promising review: "LOVE this cookbook! Some reviews comment their disappointment at frozen vegetables or canned goods being used in the recipes but to be honest, I'm happy that it does! As a married couple on a budget, we are always striving to make our money and food stretch a little further every week. I'm thrilled to know that I have many of the items in my cupboards right now to cook up something healthy, easy, and delicious!" —amazingk

    4. The Butterfly Garden, which is set in a remote mansion with a beautiful garden overseen by the Gardener, a disturbed man who captures young woman and tattoos them to make them look like butterflies.

If you're looking for some frightening reads, this made it onto our list of 39 Books That Are Actually Scary.

Promising review: "First of all, I'll start out by saying this is not a book for everyone, including the weak-hearted. It is twisted and definitely on the dark side. That being said, I absolutely loved this book. It has an original story line and pulls you in from the beginning. The main character, Maya, is a strong female character and can handle her own. That may be what put this book over the top for me. There were some twists in this book that I didn't expect and also some humor. I couldn't put this book down and one of the best ones I have read in a long time. I definitely recommend this book to those who like dark books and are looking for story you haven't heard before!" —Ashley/Josh

    5. You Have The Right to Remain Innocent, a primer on your rights in the face of police interrogation (and why they're so important).

Promising review: "Wow. I knew these tactics and techniques were used by law enforcement, I never knew how much simple statements could be woven into a guilty sentence for the most innocent. James Duane gives examples and case studies with an excellent reference section that's also worth reading. I'd recommend this book to everyone but most especially to young people, who may not be aware of their rights and the power of words." —psychteach

    6. The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood's gripping dystopian novel about a wildly repressive theocracy that was once the US.

Even if you've watched the Hulu series, do yourself a favor and read the book, too. Atwood is a master at subtly combining horror and satire. (And yeah, it is a little too real. But that's all the more reason to read it!)

Promising review: "I realize that I kind of did things backward by watching the Hulu-produced series of The Handmaid's Tale before reading Margaret Atwood's novel. But I was so impressed by the show that I wanted to see what the source material was like. And it was even better than expected. Atwood has created a truly frightening and feasible alternate reality. The unfolding of the narrative was also very well-paced, revealing significant details as if in real time. It is an impressive novel; I will have to search out some of her other titles as well. This type of speculative fiction is on par with that of J.G. Ballard in his prime." —Patrick Mc Coy

    7. A River in Darkness, a riveting memoir about life in — and escape from — North Korea.

Promising review: "This book is a must-read. I read it in a day because I couldn't put it down. It is well written, insightful and eye-opening. Not only does the author go into depth about his personal experiences, but he also spends time on historical background and the politics of the time. I think it's important for people to read this book to understand the social and political climate of North Korea. This is a solid five-star book." —Rose Princess

    8. Beneath a Scarlet Sky, a historical novel based on the true story of an 18-year-old Italian man who joins an underground railroad to help Jews escape...until a unique opportunity to spy on the Nazis presents itself.

This is also on our list of 51 Books That Will 100% Make You Cry!

Promising review: "This is an incredible story, especially because it is based on actual events, people, and places. It is one of those stories that you can't stop thinking about even when you put the book down. I found myself wanting to talk with someone about the atrocities Pino witnessed, the improbable coincidences, miracles and twists and turns his life took, and the range of raw human emotions described throughout the book: indescribable joy and triumph, pure terror, crushing guilt, murderous rage, utter and complete despair and redemption. The reader walks alongside Pino through every one of these human feelings we are blessed and cursed to experience. It is exhausting at times. This book is more than mere entertainment. I don't think anyone could make up a more heart-wrenching, miraculous, and fascinating story. It would seem too far fetched." —Jennifer Preece

    9. Matchmaking for Beginners, the perfect novel for when you've already seen all the rom-coms.

Promising review: "I loved this book so much! It was a super-easy read. In fact, I read it in two days. My work might have suffered a little as a result. Hey, it was a real page-turner! I love how the storyline was very different/unusual and had so many different stories all weaving into one. I honestly didn't know how it was going to turn out until the very end, and I love a book that keeps me hanging, but just a little! I felt like we had forward movement the whole way through the book, and it just kept getting more and more interesting. HIGHLY recommend. The perfect vacation book, or when you need a little break from reality." —SFSH

    10. The entire Hunger Games trilogy so you can finally read orrrrr re-read before she releases the PREQUEL next year!

Promising review: "Great book. I could not put it down. You will get very attached to the characters and involved in the story line. I almost wanted to read the series again when I finished the last book. Definitely worth the time, even if you have seen the movies already. The books go into so much detail developing the characters that you get personally attached to them. Each one has their own quirks and oddities that make you fall in love with them. You honestly feel like they are friends. There is just the right amount of comic relief mixed in with the darker parts of the story line to keep you from getting really angry at the situations in the book, but nowhere near enough to even be slightly cheesy. And the descriptions of the people and places are so well written, you easily come up with a mental picture of the whole story. This book sucks you in right from the beginning and won't let you back out. There were nights I literally stayed up until 4am to find out what happened next." —.

    11. The Lord of the Rings trilogy housed in a single volume so you can disappear into the detailed world of Middle Earth in the push of a button.

Promising review: "Describing this book is quite simply impossible. The story itself was written as six novels, with depth given to even the trees and shrubs so that the reader could really imagine what Tolkien himself was. I highly recommend this book. It is a high fantasy classic for a reason. Character development is first rate among all genres. No clear use of deus ex machina like in most fantasy stories. Every step feels full and heavy. Many parts of the story really have you believing you can no longer read another line (in a good way) while a certain character feels he can't take another step. It is filled with wisdom, and has been edited for over 50 years now. Do yourself and those around you a favor and read this book. If you hate fantasy, you will love this. If you love fantasy, you will be bewildered at the amount of thought that is placed at each step, and the connection you feel with the story., the movies are not better, but they could not have been done any better to represent such a masterpiece." —Thomas

    12. Alex & Me, the true story of the friendship between a scientist and her parrot (and what it taught us about animal intelligence), which you'll definitely want to read if you like pets more than people.

Promising review: "Great story about a remarkable bird. The author's relationship with Alex is heartwarming and winningly told. The things she and Alex accomplished are amazing. I liked how well she treated her birds and that she makes clear these intelligent creatures should not be left alone as solitary pets. Her research changed the way people think about birds. After reading this I watched Alex videos on YouTube." —mct

    13. Year of Yes, Shonda Rhimes's chronicle of her year accepting a challenge to say *YES* to the unexpected opportunities for 365 days,

Promising review: "I loved this book. Not only does Shonda Rhimes talk about the introvert struggle, but she also allows the reader to follow her as she pushes outside of the comfort zone. Living in a world of our own creation limited only by our imagination is great, but Shonda teaches us that the world outside of the pantry can provide you with the unexpected wonderful you cannot get in your own mind. This is an introvert must read. If you love her shows you will love this book, too. She provides so much insight to the characters here." —Julia

    14. Captain Marvel Vol. 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More, a collection of issues #1-#5 if you already loved the movie.

Promising review: "Kelly Sue is truly one of the greatest writers working in comics and Lopez's art is top notch. Love it." —GPD

    15. 1984, the terrifying classic about a future where Big Brother is always watching.

Promising review: "Amazing that Orwell was able to foresee so many things that came to pass. Much of what we see in our country today is eerily like the future Orwell described in 1984. Great read! NOTE: I read it as a college student when I was quite young for an assignment. It went right over my head, in a hurry to get assignment done. Glad I read it again!" —Amazon Customer
