It starts with a shot of the sands of Tatooine (it's the only identifiable planet in the teaser, really), while a threatening voice speaks of an "awakening."

That could just be the awakening of millions of Star Wars fans burning out the internet watching this trailer, but the voice is probably talking about some kind of rebirth within the Force. Which, in this context, does not sound good.

Rather than show us any of the characters we already know, however, director J.J. Abrams has chosen to introduce four characters new to the saga — starting with John Boyega (Attack the Block) as a Stormtrooper.

And finally there's this dude. Walking in the dark. In a hooded cloak. With a red lightsaber featuring a hilt. While that same deep, foreboding voice says, "The dark side…" Soooo, villain, right?

Who is this guy? Could it be Adam Driver's character? Or Andy Serkis'? Or Domhnall Gleeson's? Or Gwendoline Christie's? Or… could it be… Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker?! (OK, no, it almost certainly isn't Luke.)

Also, is this the same character as the one talking about "awakenings" and the dark side of the Force? (Collider's Steven Weintraub is saying the voice is Andy Serkis, fwiw.)

Whoever this cloaked figure is, they better not let that new lightsaber get too close to their face.

There are also some flashes of some intriguing (if kind of random) moments from the film, like this droid bobbling along on a ball.

Overall, this was a true teaser. There was no sense of the plot, who any of the new characters really are, or how they relate to each other. And, of course, there was no sign of Han, Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, C-3PO, or R2-D2.

The movie doesn't premiere for over a year, however, so there's time. Patience. We need to learn patience.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens on Dec. 18, 2015.
