It is hard to know where to begin with this movie, which has so many outrageously entertaining set pieces featuring Channing Tatum and his male stripping crew grinding, thrusting, and disrobing with increasingly delirious creativity. But if I had to choose just one OMG moment, it would be Big Dick Richie (Joe Manganiello) working every last inch of his impossible body and every last note of the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” to get a sullen convenience store clerk to smile.

18. The first full boxing match in Creed

The first official professional match for boxer Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) is also his first with legendary boxer Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) in his corner as his trainer. To fully capture the “holy shit” quality of the experience, director Ryan Coogler chose to film it in one, unbroken take. The result is a thrilling moment for Adonis and Rocky, and an astonishing feat of filmmaking.

17. What's on Seth Rogen’s phone in The Night Before

In this Christmas stoner comedy, soon-to-be-father Isaac (Seth Rogen) gets a dick pic sent to him on a phone he unwittingly swapped with a woman (played by Mindy Kaling) at another bar. Since Isaac is high on just about every drug imaginable, he thinks the photo is meant for him, and he begins to play along. It’s rare to see an erect penis in a studio movie — Rogen told BuzzFeed News that they basically had to trick the MPAA into letting them keep it — but what makes the scene such a delight is how readily Isaac accepts that he could be attracted to that man’s penis.

16. Jason Schwartzman and Adam Scott’s naked dance in The Overnight

Speaking of penis, the highlight of this Sundance darling is the scene in which Jason Schwartzman’s Kurt (a very well-endowed East Los Angeles Renaissance man) convinces Adam Scott’s Alex (a new L.A. transplant who's deeply self-conscious about his micropenis) to let his little buddy fly free. And then Kurt and Alex dance in the moonlight, to the startled bemusement of their respective wives (Judith Godrèche and Taylor Schilling). Yay for penis!

15. What’s in the walls…and in the shed in Sicario

Just about every second of director Denis Villeneuve’s drug thriller vibrates with an almost unbearable tension, culminating in a confrontation between a mysterious assassin (Benicio Del Toro) and his main target: a drug lord and his family. But none of it would be quite as effective without the deeply unsettling mood set in the movie's opening scene, when FBI Agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) discovers a house in Arizona filled with bodies sealed inside its walls. That would be freaky enough, but when her team opens a shed in the backyard, it explodes. Talk about starting things off with a bang.

14. Christian punishes Anastasia in Fifty Shades of Grey

Like Magic Mike XXL, you kind of know what you’re getting into when you buy a ticket to this adaptation of E.L. James’ BDSM bestseller. But the climactic scene — after Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) asks Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) to show her how he wants to punish her, so he strips her naked and flogs her — is still shocking for a studio movie. And if, like me, you had not read James’ book ahead of time, the way the movie ends (with Anastasia just leaving Christian’s penthouse) is one of the biggest WTF cliffhangers of the year.

13. The attack at the beach house in It Follows

For the first half of this superlatively scary horror indie, the mysterious It that seems to be stalking Jay (Maika Monroe) after she has sex with It’s previous stalkee could arguably be some kind of psychotic break, a terrifying figment of her imagination. But after she and her friends go to a beach house — and Jay’s friends see the invisible It lift her hair into the air — there is no denying that It is coming, and It won’t stop until Jay is destroyed.

12. Ava's choice in Ex Machina

Ava (Alicia Vikander) is an artificially intelligent robot trapped in the underground compound of her maker Nathan (Oscar Isaac), until Nathan tasks one of his employees, Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), with testing whether Ava has reached sentience. Ava starts a chain of events in which she expertly manipulates both Caleb and Nathan until she is finally set free...and Nathan is dead. But once she is liberated, Ava makes the breathtaking choice to leave Caleb behind, trapping him inside Nathan’s compound for the rest of his sad, likely brief life.

11. RIP Zara in Jurassic World

Yeah, Zara (Katie McGrath) is a little annoying, and yes, she neglects to supervise her boss’s nephews Gray (Ty Simpkins) and Zach (Nick Robinson) as they explore Jurassic World. But when the dinosaurs begin to run amok, as they do, they dispatch Zara in an outrageously disproportionate parade of terrifying violence, including a midair pteranodon tug-of-war, and capped with Zara getting chomped by the giant aquatic mosasaurus. Poor Zara! You did not deserve this.

10. Sarah Silverman fucks a teddy bear in I Smile Back

There’s not much more to say, really. Sarah Silverman, as a wife and mother with bipolar disorder and addictions to drugs and alcohol, fucks a teddy bear. In the bedroom of her character’s young daughter. While said daughter is asleep. This really happened in a movie, and Silverman really was the one who did it, and she was nominated for a SAG Award for it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

9. Samuel L. Jackson gets his revenge in The Hateful Eight

It is deliberately unclear whether the story that Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) unspools at the midpoint of Quentin Tarantino’s three-hour Western is true or not. But between the sheer audacity of the story — that he forced the son of Confederate Gen. Sandy Smithers (Bruce Dern) to strip naked in the snow and give him a blow job — the gusto with which Jackson tells it, and the go-for-broke verve with which Tarantino brings it to life, it's one of the most memorable scenes of the year, by far.

8. Meet the real Pop Pop and Nana in The Visit

It’s that classic story: Kids go to visit their grandparents for the first time, and the grandparents are kind of nice and kind of weird and maybe a bit creepy. Of course, this is an M. Night Shyamalan movie, but for the first time in ages, the requisite twist is a good one: The grandparents turn out to be escaped mental patients who killed the kids’ real grandparents and proceed to terrorize them until the kids are forced to literally murder the impostors.

7. What’s in Julia Roberts’ shed in Secret in Their Eyes

If you’ve seen the 2009 Argentine crime thriller El Secreto de Sus Ojos on which this American remake is based, then you know what really happened to the rapist and murderer at the center of the story. Instead of disappearing, or being dispatched by his victim’s mother, FBI agent Jess Cobb (Julia Roberts), has kept him prisoner in a shed in her rural Southern California home — for 13 years. Writer-director Billy Ray spins a few more changes from the original film — including what Jess’s best friend Ray Kasten (Chiwetel Ejiofor) does upon discovering her makeshift prison — and the result is truly jaw-dropping.

6. Goodbye mommy in Goodnight Mommy

Many savvy moviegoers could see the “twist” in this psychological thriller coming: One of the two twins in the movie (Lukas and Elias Schwarz) — who imprison the woman they believe is impersonating their mother — is actually dead, accidentally killed by the other twin. But the real shocker of Goodnight Mommy happens after that twist is revealed: The living son burns his mother alive, and we excruciatingly watch it unfold. Yeeeeee-ikes.

5. The bear attack in The Revenant

Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio), the frontiersman guide for a fur-trapping expedition in the 1820s, is so viciously attacked by a grizzly bear that his compatriots ultimately choose to leave him for dead to save their own skin. But it’s one thing to know a guy is going to get attacked by a grizzly bear, and it’s another thing to watch Glass get mauled, bitten, and battered in a staggering, agonizing single take.

Seriously, if you are among the tens of people who apparently haven’t seen The Force Awakens yet, you're about to be spoiled.

Kylo Ren is the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa and is really named Ben. And when Han confronts his son and begs him to come home, Kylo instead kills his father by stabbing him through the heart with a lightsaber.

There is a degree of inevitable logic to this moment: Star Wars has always been, at its core, a saga about the Skywalker family, and Kylo Ren’s obsession with Darth Vader makes a great deal more sense knowing Vader is also his grandfather. And each Star Wars movie has climaxed with an epochal moment, usually a death — Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, Qui-Gon Jinn, Mace Windu, etc. — and Han Solo is the legacy character whose death would have the biggest impact this early in the new trilogy.

3. The final present in The Gift

From the moment high school classmates Gordo (Joel Edgerton, who also wrote and directed the film) and Simon (Jason Bateman) reunite after Simon moves his wife Robyn (Rebecca Hall) to Los Angeles, something feels off about their relationship. Simon is too slick, and Gordo is too sad and creepy. But even after Robyn learns that Simon was a bully who ruined Gordo's life by making up a story that Gordo was molested, we're not quite ready for Gordo's chilling final gift to Simon.

After Robyn has given birth and told Simon she wants to leave him, Simon comes home to find a giant wrapped box on his doorstep. It contains a videotape of Robyn fainting in their home, and Gordo approaching her unconscious body, as if he may rape her — roughly nine months earlier. Then the tape cuts out. And then Gordo calls Simon, and taunts him, refusing to disclose whether he is the real father of Robyn's baby: "You see what happens when you poison other people's minds with ideas?"

2. The Splendid Angharad’s fate in Mad Max: Fury Road

By the time the Splendid Angharad (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) — the most prized of warlord Immortan Joe's (Hugh Keays-Byrne) imprisoned wives — barely escapes being crushed by a jutting slab of rock, we've already experienced so many breathless action set pieces that her survival comes as a relief. But of course she would survive; she's a pregnant woman in a studio mov— oh shit she just fell, and oh shit she just got ran over, and OH SHIT THEY KILLED THE SPLENDID ANGHARAD!

And that is when we realize that Mad Max: Fury Road doesn't care about the rules, and it isn't just a fantastic action movie — it's one of the best action movies ever made.

1. The unspeakably awful thing that happens to Deputy Nick in Bone Tomahawk

It's not like Sheriff Hunt (Kurt Russell) and his posse weren't warned that going after settlers kidnapped by cave-dwelling cannibals was a bad idea. But by the time they themselves are captured by the cannibals — or "troglodytes," to use the term of art applied to them — Hunt learns just how bad in the most gruesome, horrifying, dear-god-what-did-I-just-see way imaginable.

If you've seen this Western-horror film — which literalizes the trope of Native American "savages" in the Old West to extremes you likely never thought possible — then at least a part of you probably wishes you didn't know anything about this scene whatsoever. If you haven't seen this movie, then you may want to stop reading here and be happy in your relative ignorance.

OK. So. To be brief, and blunt: In front of a caged Hunt, his compatriot, Chicory (Richard Jenkins), and one of the settlers they hoped to rescue, Samantha (Lili Simmons), the troglodytes strip Hunt's deputy Nick (Evan Jonigkeit) naked, scalp him, gag him with his own scalp, hang him upside down, hack him in half, pull him apart by the legs — alive — and cause his intestines to spill out onto the cave floor with a plop. And then they eat him.
