Who doesn't love a podcast these days? So here are my favourite Black British podcasts you should check out this month
Black Scot Pod is a refreshing podcast hosted by Suzie and Shirley, detailing the life of an average black girl in Scotland. When people think about black people in the UK their minds immediately go to major cities like London, so it's eye-opening to hear the opinions from those outside of those areas. Listen out for Shirley admitting she had NEVER HEARD OF HAMILTON!
Don't Alert The Stans AKA Datspod is a music and pop culture podcast, that has a direct focus on stan culture. The hosts – Nic, Sope, and Eden navigate through the latest releases from artists that you love, as well as discussing trending topics. All three men are so well-spoken, this podcast is like brandy in your ears. Listen out for dedication to Chadwick Boseman, it will leave a cuddle on your heart.
Goal Diggers is the first Black British female-led football podcast. Yes, women watch and enjoy football too. From the Premier League to The Bundesliga, Goal Diggers have got you covered. Have a listen here on their thoughts on social movements such as Black Lives Matter having involvement within the sport.
I think it's safe to say that Two Two's Podcast has the best opening music out there. Hosted by Rose and Nanalise, Two Two's Podcast are a pair of Black lesbians creating a safe space for the Black LGBTQ+ community in the UK. Listen out for their thoughts on body dysmorphia and locs.
Taking inspiration from the Ricky Gervais Show, this is not your normal podcast – Pass The Meerkat is a hilarious animated short podcast detailing the lives of nine men growing up in London. Hosted by Manny, Gbenz, Tim, Vish, Pedro, Dej, Fabbz, Eman and Sheikh, the lads are not short of opinions on all topics. Watch here to see the boys detail the different ways they all approach the opposite sex.
There's something about the trumpets to Eve's "Who's That Girl?" that takes you to a happier place, combined with the infectious laughter of Akua and Esther, NoShade Podcast is here for a good time. Their slogan is: "We keep it real and honest with a dash of shade" and isn't this how we should all live our lives? Listen to them discuss how many of us are losing our dating skills due to lockdown.
"A podcast exploring the mind of a '90s baby" – 90s Baby Show does exactly what it says on the tin. Fred, Temi, and VP hop on the mic each week to discuss the everchanging topics of the world. This show is best known for having some of the most iconic visuals in the game, check them out here.
Hosted by Vic and Jaz, Black Gals Livin is basically a look into the girls' group chat. Nothing is off-limits with these two, from deep conversations looking into their mental health, to hyping up the latest Love Island stars, you will hear it all. They do not shy away from hilariously embarrassing stories to share with their listeners. Has your wig ever fallen off while getting your eyebrows done? Well Vic's has, listen to the story here.
If there's one thing Off The Cuff does is get you in the right mood. What other podcast starts with a music track before they begin speaking? I'll wait. Hosted by Fols and Vans, Off The Cuff tackles everyday topics from politics to pop culture – like they say: "A good honest convo never hurt anyone". Do you agree with their thoughts on the top MC's in the UK?
In a time like 2020 where our brunch dates have been brought to a halt, Brunch & Bantu Knots Podcast are filling the void for that mimosa filled discussion. Mona, Ness, and Rumbi are a trio from Manchester "exploring the fun, crazy, and tough topics surrounding the black community and culture. Listen out for their chat on body shaming, which is an eye-opening discussion on double standards.
The Part Timers' are are collective formed by D'wain, Wegz, Rangi, Ali, Tevin, Dan, and Chris who promote their part-time hustles while coming together to discuss current events, music, and sport. You can feel the love between the group through the podcast so it must be strong. Do you think eating fruit is living lavish? Listen to the boys drag D'wain for thinking it is.
Black, Broke and Brilliant - perfect insta bio - is hosted by Ivy and Samira. These girls are not shy when it comes to dragging the UK government and we love to see it. "From thriving to surviving" the girls keep it real to the core. Listen to them commend Marcus Rashford for using his platform to better the UK, and provide an amazing role model for children.
Pints of Malt is a hosted by Irish Nigerian lads called Femi, Kenny, Charlie, and Jibbz. Who doesn't love the Irish accent hey? Hearing Black people outside of London is a real treasure, listening to a different perspective but also comforted in the fact that we all live the same life. You can feel the brotherhood and energy in these guys' laughs, I feel like I'm surrounded by my cousins. You have to listen to them debating whether they'll ever trust cakes again, you will be in stitches.
And finally this is simply the best podcast to grace the earth... But I might be biased because I am a cohost. Seasoned Sessions is hosted by myself (Ada) and Hanifah, and each episode we discuss the Black news that happened that week. We discuss it all – whether it's political movements that have caused strain within the Black community– to how we're inspired by Meghan Thee Stallion. Catch up with the podcast here and listen to us debate some pretty NSFW topics.
