1976 Ad Exec: Steve Jobs Is A “Joker”

35 years ago, a Silicon Valley advertising executive named Mike Rose sent a note to his business partner about “this joker” Steve Jobs who would be reaching out to him for a business proposition. Jobs and his partner Steve Wozniak were going to propose the ad guys print their first-ever Apple 1 computer manual “for nothing.”

“This joker is going to be calling you. Somebody at Regis McKenna recommendd us. They are 2 guys — they build kits — operate out of a garage — want our catalog sheets. Want it for nothing.”

“Wouldn’t trust me. Told him we’d like to see what they’ve got — we’d estimate — then decide. Sounds flaky. Watch it! Mike”

Jobs ended up declining their offer for the production job because it was too high, but he and Wozniak seemed to do just fine anyway. Rose donated his letter to Stanford University in 1988.
